ObitJohn's obituary was published in the Bourbon News Mirror on 29 May 1902:

John Elkins was born in Marion County, Ohio, June 21, 1813 and died in Bourbon, Ind., May 23, 1902, having reached the ripe old age of 88 years, 11 months and 2 days. Ephriam Elkins, father of deceased, was a Scotchman by birth and Christina Prill, his wife, was born in Germany. When John was but a youth his parents moved to Marion County, Indiana. Here he grew to manhood. At the age of 29, he married Elizabeth Bell and to this union were born 5 children - three sons and two daughters: Thomas Ephriam, James Edward and John Williams Elkins and Margaret Jane and Martha Christina Elkins, the last named son being the only surviving child. Twenty-nine years ago his faithful and loving wife, Elizabeth, died. Some time after her demise he married Mrs. Sarah Ann Dick, of Bourbon, Indiana. The issue of this union was a daughter, Effie Elkins, who died two years ago. In 1850 John Elkins moved to Marshall County, where he resided for more than half a century. At an early age he joined the M.E. church, but after his marriage to his surviving wife, he united with the U. B. church to which Mrs. Elkins belonged and both have since lived exemplary christian lives. For the past two years the deceased was afflicted with an angry eucephaloid cancer. During those two years he heroically bore this affliction. The past winter the pain became so excruciating that nothing save narcotics gave him relief. At last death put an end to his suffering and his spirit has taken its flight to Him who gave it. His beloved wife survives him. In the death of John Elkins the wife has lost a faithful husband, the son a loving father, the relatives a generous friend, the church a devout member, the community an honest and honorable citizen the memory of whom will ever be pleasant to all. Mrs. Elkins appreciates the many kindnesses shown her during the sad days and hours.
