(Witness) BioTHE GILBERT J. ALEXANDER FAMILY
Gilbert J. Alexander, son of William and Ann Alexander, was born December 1, 1877, near Westfield, Wisconsin. He was the youngest of 11 children and came to Nebraska when he was two years old in a covered wagon with his parents and another family. His parents took a homestead four miles south of Plainview with a schoolhouse just across the road, and that is where Gib, as he was known to his friends, spent the night of the blizzard of 1888. He could have gone home, but, since his mother prepared food for the teacher and other pupils, it was fun to spend the night there too. As a young man he spent many days in the hay fields, sweeping hay for 50 cents a day. When his father moved to town to run a livery stable, Gib helped there, and he also worked in the bakery, which was owned by his brother-in-law, Sam Johnson.
On April 23, 1913 Gib was married to Effie Otto, eldest daughter of J. W. and Mattie Otto, at her parents' home five miles south of Plainview. They lived on a farm northwest of Plainview for about three years, then they bought a farm on the Willow Creek, south of Plainview. For a few years prices were good and they, along with the neighbor's help, would haul their livestock in wagons to Copenhagen to catch the train for market. Gib loved to hear the first birds of the spring, and never failed to go to the sand hills south of the farm to pick wild sweetpeas to take to the cemetery on Memorial Day. There was just Memorial Park Cemetery then, but he always walked up one row of stones and down the other, always stopping at the one the school teacher had erected in memory of her pupils who had lost their lives in the blizzard of '88.
Gib and Effie's home was always open to anyone passing by for a little cup of coffee. Effie chopped a lot of the wood for her cookstove with an ax and carried the water, two pails at a time, for all the needs. But there was always something good from the oven, probably a cake made with a cup of cream. There were lots of relatives, and with five children, the table was always full. When the bank failed and there was no price for anything, they sold the farm and moved a couple of more times before finally making their home five miles south of Plainview.
Gib and Effie enjoyed the rural school Christmas programs, box socials, and especially the picnics on the last day of school, when everybody took lots to eat and played ball in the afternoon. They are both deceased and buried in Pleasant View Cemetery. Their five children are: Jane Harris in Pico Rivera, California; Genevieve Snodgrass, living south of Royal; Thelma Johnson, living in Plainview; Dennis, living in Norfolk; and Lela Meirose, living in Aberdeen, South Dakota.7
