Slisher was born June 17, 1911, in Peru, Ind. She and her family moved to Bethesda in 1950. She is a member of the Bethesda Campground Methodist Church, Bethesda Quilters and is a retired teacher from Cushman Schools. She is the wife of the late Paul Slisher and the mother of the late Robert Slisher and Ruth Joann Fulbright. Her children, Art Slisher, Dick Slisher, Namona Nelson, Bill Slisher, Rosemary Walker, Elda Franks and John Slisher, and their families will host the event. All family and friends are invited to attend. She requests no gifts.5

Mary Edith Burdine Slisher, 91, of Batesville died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at Batesville. Born June 17, 1911, in Miami County, Ind., she was the daughter of William E. Burdine and Bessie McCormick Burdine. She was a retired elementary school teacher and a member of Bethesda Campground United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the Bethesda Quilters Club. Survivors include four sons, Paul A. Slisher and William J. Slisher, both of Bethesda, Richard L. Slisher of Roann, Ind., and John P. Slisher of Southside; three daughters, Namona M. Nelson of San Augustine, Texas, Rosemary Walker of Fort Smith and Elda S. Franks of Bethesda; three half brothers, Robert E. Burdine of Michigan City, Ind., John Lanahan of Wisconsin and Don Weeks of Peru, Ind; a sister, Ruth Schroeder of Michigan City; 23 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul V. Slisher; a son, Robert A. Slisher; a daughter, Joann Fulbright; a granddaughter, Laurie Lawrence; a great-grandson, Joseph Slisher; a sister, Lena Burdine; a brother, Arthur Burdine; a half brother, Richard Burdine; and two half sisters, Gladys Lanahan and Violet Burdine. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Campground United Methodist Church in Bethesda with the Rev. Randy Ludwig officiating. Burial will be in Campground Cemetery at Bethesda with arrangements by Willis-Hays Funeral Service of Batesville. Pallbearers will be Vernon Slisher, Michael Fulbright, Jerry Walker, Ed Slisher, Kenneth Franks and Brian Keith Fulbright. Honorary pallbearers are Richard Aaron Slisher, Paul Joseph Slisher, Bradley Ray Fulbright and Christopher Slisher. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight.6

Ruth Joann Slisher Fulbright, 53, of Batesville died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2000, at a local hospital. Born March 27, 1947, in Wabash, Ind., she was the daughter of Paul and Mary Slisher of Batesville. She was a retired assembly line worker from ConAgra. She was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church in Batesville. Survivors include her husband, Billie Fulbright; three sons, Michael Fulbright, Brian Fulbright and Bradley Fulbright, all of Batesville; two daughters, Janice Lawrence and Anita Nail, both of Batesville; four brothers, Art Slisher, Bill Slisher and John Slisher, all of Batesville, and Dick Slisher of Indiana; three sisters, Rosemary Walker and Elda Franks, both of Batesville, and Namona Nelson of Texas; seven grandchildren; and her mother. She was preceded in death by her father; a brother, Robert Slisher; and a niece, Laurel Lawrence. The graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Campground Cemetery at Bethesda with the Rev. Bobby Sheperd officiating. Arrangements are by Batesville Funeral Service. Pallbearers will be her sons and sons-in-law.2

George W. Mechem, 71, died early Sunday morning, June 6, in Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown, Md., where he had been a patient since May 19. The body was brought to the Hunter Funeral Home here and later taken to the home. He was a native of this county, a son of the late Frank and Sophia Mechem. After more than thirty years service in the U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, where he operated a monotype machine, he retired and came here to live where he and his wife purchased the Lowman Michael home place in Rock Gap where they lived since. About thirty-five years of his life was spent in Washington and his first work there was with the Adams Express Company.
Surviving are his widow, two brothers, Ashton and Cleveland, of the county and one sister, Mrs. Gladys Tyre, of Texas. Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon with the Revs. E.C. Day, of Elkton, Va., and C.A. Moon, of the United Brethren Circuit here, officiating. The deceased was a member of Mt. Tabor Church and of a Washington Masonic lodge. Members of Deford Lodge, this place, were bearers and held their burial service at the grave in Greenway Cemetery.
Those here from a distance to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Johnston, Mrs. C.J. Riley, D.F. Michael, D.F. Mechem and Mrs. Lavina Sanders of Washington; J.C. Yost, Roy Van Fleet and Mrs. Robert Allen, Cumberland, Md; Mrs. T.E. Allen, Mrs. George Taylor, Mrs. Pressly Allen, Mrs. Jack Day and Orian Cannan of Green Spring.4
