John Mast Sr.

M, b. between 1725 and 1740, d. 1800
Last Edited30 Oct 2012
Birth*John Mast Sr. was born between 1725 and 1740 at Switzerland; Mast Family History says 1740, but that appears to late.1
Immigration*He immigrated on 3 November 1750 to Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; from Rotterdam, on the ship Brotherhood, with his brother (Bishop) Jacob Mast and four sisters, in the care of their uncle Johannes Mast.2
Marriage*He married Catherine Barbara Harman (Unconfirmed) circa 1755; based solely on children's estimated dates of birth.
(Witness) BioJohn Mast, Sr. was Amish when he immigrated to America in 1758 on the ship Brotherhood. He came with his uncle Johannes Mast and brother Jacob Mast and four sisters, two of whom wer Anna and Magdelena. Anna married John Yoder and Magdelena married Michael Troyer, Jacob Mast married Magdelena Holly. (Source: Amish & Mennoite Genealogies; Gingrich & Kreider).

John Mast, Sr. eventually settled in Randolph County, North Carolina from where his son John and daughters Elizabeth, Nancy, Susannah and Hannah migrated to the Northwest Territory with their spouse on September 10, 1801 along with other families.

In 1779 Tax List of Randolph County, North Carolina, Andrew Fouts and his brother, Jacob Fouts along with John Mast, Frederick Waymire and Andrew Hoover (Jr.) are shown on the "List of William Cole" as refusing to "Take the Oath of Allegiance or to give an Inventory of Taxables," indicating they were at the time Quakers.

Frederick Waymire was a contemporary of John Mast, Sr., born about 1749. Andrew Hoover, "Jr." was also a contemporary, born 1752 and husband of Frederick Waymire's sister Elizabeth. Andrew and Jacob Fouts (Pfouts) were brothers. Jacob married Eleanor Malinda Waymire, another sister of Frederick Waymire. Frederick Waymire, Andrew Hoover, Jacob Pfouts each migrated to Ohio, residing in Miami or Montgomery Counties, as dis John Mast's son John Mast, Jr. and four of his sisters.

Another Source:

"John Mast, Sr. was born in Switzerland in 1740 and died in Randolph Co., N.C. in 1800. Orphaned John, brother, Jacob Mast, and 4 sisters immigrated to the Schuykill River in Pennsylvania under the care of their uncle, Johannes Mast" on the ship Botherhood, John Thompson, Captain which arrived in Philadelphia from Rotterdam on Nov. 3, 1750. This account from a 2nd hand history, although the best info we have, has not yet been supported by first hand records. Supposedly the only copy of the passengers from this ship's arrival included 119 persons out of the 300 who were on board, and no Masts are on it to verify the data above.

If his wife was born in 1725 or 1733 as now suspected by me, then his birthdate is likely to be earlier than the 1740 date often given also. I am making this assumption until I find first hand information otherwise. Around 1760 they moved into the Conestoga Valley (in Lancaster Co.?) of Pennsylvania due to Indian uprisings. It is here that his brother Jacob Mast became a Bishop of the Mennonite Church. Although Jacob is usually listed as the older brother, there is no first hand evidence of this. Brother John married and had several children before Jacob began having children and could easily be the older brother.

Before 1763, John Mast, Sr. drifted on foot from what is now Elverson located west of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in what appears to be the border of Chester Co., PA and Bucks Co. It was the home of his brother Jacob. He traveled through Virginia to what is now Randolph Co., NC. (C-205) In one account, he moved south because he and his brother had a falling out. In one published account, he and his family of wife and about 4 children migrated with the Beiler and Fisher families leaving Malvern, Chester Co., PA which is even closer to Philadelphia, PA to go to Watuaga Co., NC and then to Rowan County, NC. Malvern was not settled by Amish Mennonites (as opposed to just the Mennonites with whom they rarely associated) until 1768, so it is somewhat unlikely that this account is accurate due to the fact that John and several Fouts and Hoover families bought land on Feb. 17, 1763 in Rowan Co., NC. It became part of Guilford County, NC when Guilford Co. was formed and is currently a part of Randolph County, NC. John's sister, Magdalena moved to what became Randolph Co., North Carolina also in one account. However, I suspect this is not true, as in 1810 she appears to move to Holmes Co., Ohio with her son John from Somerset Co., PA. Their other three sisters are supposed to have died unmarried back in Berks Co., PA being buried near their brother, Jacob. C-270g, E)

John Mast, Sr. is often listed as a Revolutionary War soldier. This is based on the fact that John Mast Sr. with his son John Mast, Jr. (and David Mast) supposedly appear in the records of the Siege of Charleston in the 1797 Yearbook of the City of Charleston, SC on pg. 405. However, when the original records are checked the names are for a family of Mash's, not Masts. This makes sense that John Mast Sr. and relatives were not a part of the Revolutionary War because John Mast, along with Andrew Fouts, Jacob Fouts, Frederick Waymire and Andrew Hoover, are shown on the 1779 Randolph Co, NC tax list of William Cole as having refused to take the Oath of Allegiance because they were pacifists. The other families listed in this group were Quakers suggesting that Jacob Mast had similar feelings. (C-1058, 2251e, E)
John Mast Sr. and Barbara had 12 children, ten of whom came to Ohio, seven daughters and son's David, John and Jacob, about 1801. They settled in Miami and Montgomery counties. Many of their children attended Quaker meetings and married Quaker spouses although they were never official members of the Quaker church.
Many of the Harmans also settled in Ohio, but not in Miami Co. This info. is from Brien's Vol. I of Quaker Genealogies, a section entitled: The Mast Family. (C-205) Items in ( ) are added from other sources: HISTORY OF WATAUGA CO., NC, p.330. (C-270b) and info. from Mrs. McIntosh (C-270g) (*NOTE: The dates on this family group sheet should be taken as opinion only. They are often contradicted between sources, especially birthdates. Birth order of John and Barbara Mast's children has not been the same in any two records I've seen.) 11

Death*Cutliffe Harmon died in 1838 at Ashe, North Carolina.6
(Witness) BioCutliff Harman was born in 1748 in Rowan Co., N.C. and died in 1838. His father, George Hermann (Harman) came with his six brothers to Pennsylvania from their native home near the Danube River in Germany. George then traveled into Maryland where he met and married Cutliff's mother, Mary Margaret Wiley. Together they journeyed down the Shenandoah Valley and finally into North Carolina where they settled in Rowan County. Cutliff first married Suzan Fouts. Suzan was born in 1751 in Rowan County and died July 18, 1817. She was the daughter of Theobald David Pfautz (Fouts) and Catrina Spangle and was of Swiss ancestry. The Harman and Fout families had been friends and neighbors for many years in both Pennsylvania and North Carolina, settling in the same counties. After Cutliff and Suzan's marriage, Cutliff was employed by Daniel Boone, the famous frontiersman, and a Col. Robertson to help trans-port goods from Yadkin Valley, N.C. to Sycamore Shoals near Elizabethton, Tennessee and from the mountains of western North Carolina to the State of Franklin (now eastern Tennessee). Col. Robertson was also involved in the purchase of several counties from the Cherokee Indians. On one particular trip, Cutliff passed through Wilkes Co., (later Ashe Co. and now Watauga Co.), N. C. He liked the area so well that he decided to move there, and he bought 522 acres of land from James Gwyn for 300 pounds. The land had been granted to James Gwyn for 50 shillings for every one hundred acres, and the original land grant was signed by Samuel Johnston, Governor of North Carolina on May 18, 1789. This land, (later known as the Harmon and John Mast lands), was transferred to Cutliff on Aug. 6, 1791. The country was then a territory to the Ohio River and was called the Washington. Cutliff went back to Rowan County and brought his wile and six children to what is now Cove Creek in Sugar Grove, N.C.
While Cutliff built their new home, he and his family took shelter beneath a huge rock at the mouth of Phillips Branch known as "Shupe's Rockhouse," getting its name from a Shupe family that once lived under it. Ac-cording to an old newspaper clipping, the rockhouse was a beautiful and lovely chamber midway in the face of a cliff 100 feet high. The shelter was entered by a descending stairway of three natural stone steps, and Cove Creek ran west almost to the base of the cliff and then turned directly south. This rockhouse has since been called the "Harmon Rockhouse," and the first white child born in the area was supposedly born there.
Cutliff's new neighbors were Benjamin Ward, Sr., a Revolutionary War veteran living on Watauga River, and Samuel Hix, a Tory seeking refuge in the Hix Settlement in Valle Crucis, N.C. Down through the generations, the descendants of these men have inter-married time and time again. Either Cutliff Harman or Samuel Hix was the first person to bring the "Jack Tales" to this area, learning them from the early pioneers of America with whom they had become acquainted, and perhaps adding their own German touches. Cutliff's second wife was Elizabeth Parker, widow of Christian Parker, whom he married in 1825. They had no children. Cutliff died at the age of ninety, and he and his wives are buried in the old Harmon Family cemetery on Cove Creek in Sugar Grove next to the land where their home once stood.

Cutliff and Suzan Fouts Harman had ten children:
