John William Braithwaite, 74, prominent retired merchant here, died Sunday morning at his home on South Washington Street following an illness of several months. He was a native of Frederick County, Virginia, a son of the late Oliver D., and Lydia Ann Kerns Braithwaite and was born June 6, 1878.
His first work here in the general merchandising business was with F.W. Yancey and Co., where in 1906 he was employed as a clerk. This business was operated in the building now occupied by Warm Springs Restaurant. Later he was employed as chief clerk in the Community Store operated by the late Henry Freedman. This was where Floyd's place is now located. Fro 1913 to 1918 he was assistant manager of Hotel Washington. He held a similar position for a short time at the Evans Hotel in Winchester. Returning here he opened a general store which he and his wife operated until his illness forced him to give up the work. For a few weeks during his illness the store remained closed. Since the first of this year the store has been under lease and operated as Hardin's Grocery. He was a member of the Jr. O.U.A.M. and the Methodist Church here.
Surviving are his wife, the former Agnes Iden, at the home one daughter, Mrs. J.W. Fulton, Berkeley Springs; one son, Willard I., Berkeley Springs; one sister, Mrs. Oliver DeHaven, Winchester, Va; two brothers-O. Hollis Braithwaite, Whitacre, Va; Dora Braithwaite, Cross Junction, Va; two half sisters-Mrs. Roy Willy, and Mrs. Harry Buncutter, Winchester; step mother, Mrs. C.D. Braithwaite, Winchester; and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Henry H. Rowland, pastor of the Methodist Church, officiating, assisted by the Rev. H. Middleton Raynal, pastor of the Presbyterian Church. Burial was in Greenway Cemetery. Honorary bearers were Floyd Yost, A.C. Kline, W.B. Fearnow, Henry Gray, H.D. Beeler, Henry Gorrell, T.E. Ditto, Wendell Kerns and S.S. Buzzerd. Active bearers were Vernon Henry, Harry Widmyer, Albert Butler, Roscoe Barney, Hunton Hardin and Stanley Fearnow.1

Funeral services were conducted Monday, June 27 at 2:00 p.m. at the Melvin T. Strider Sudley Funeral Home, Shepherdstown, for Willard I. Braithwaite, Rt. 1, who died Saturday, June 25, in the Newton D. Baker Veterans Hospital. Braithwaite was born in Berkeley Springs, a son of Mrs. Agnes Iden Braithwaite of Berkeley Springs, and the late John W. Braithwaite.
Surviving In addition to his mother are his wife, Dorothy Kaylor Braithwaite at the home; one son, Vaughn K. Braithwaite, Key Biscayne, Fla; one grandchild; one sister, Mrs. Mildred Fulton of Berkeley Springs. Braithwaite was retired from the Baker VA Center in 1973 after 30 years of service as chief of corrective therapy. He was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church of Shepherdstown where he served as lay reader and vestryman; he graduated from Shepherd College in 1933 and attended PMR School in Fort Lewis, Wash; he was past president of the Morgan County Kiwanis Club; past president of the Maryland and Pennsylvania horse shows; a former teacher and coach at Berkeley Springs High School; a member of the Knights of Pythias; past district commander of the American Legion 10th District; past commander of Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post, Berkeley Springs; and a veteran of World War II, servicing as a Master Sgt., in the Army. Braithwaite was recognized by the Veterans Administration for work done in prosthetic devices. Memorial services were conducted by Chaplain Fred Duckert of Newton D. Baker VA Hospital, and interment was in Beaver Creek Cemetery. The family has requested that remembrances take the form of contributions to the Shepherdstown Trinity Episcopal Church Memorial Fund.3

Lewis A. Allemong, a retired postal worker, died Friday, August 10, in Winchester Memorial Hospital. He was born in Morgan County September 9, 1909, son of Mrs. Hattie Beeler Allemong, Berkeley Springs, and the late Benjamin Allemong. He was a graduate of Berkeley Springs High School. Appointed to the postal service as a city carrier in Washington, D.C., July 1, 1936, was transferred to Berkeley Springs when city delivery was inaugurated January 1, 1949. On April 1, 1957, he was appointed a rural carrier, the position he held until his retirement June 30, 1973. An active member of First United Methodist Church, he filled various official positions and was serving as chairman of the board of trustees. He was a member of the Berkeley Springs Junior Order of American Mechanics and was West Virginia state conductor.
He is survived by his mother; his wife, the former Katherine Ruppenthal, at the home; three sons, Douglas, of Martinsburg; David, Winchester, Va; and Stephen, of Berkeley Springs; four grandchildren; three brothers, James, Silver Spring, Md; Elmo and Frank, both of Berkeley Springs, three sisters, Mrs. Reva Michael, Berkeley Springs; Mrs. Eileen Reeder, Marlowe Heights, Md., and Mrs. Betty Dorsey, Tulsa, Okla. Services were held at the First UM Church, Monday August 13, conducted by Rev. Monroe Shearer. Interment was in Greenway Cemetery. Arrangements were made by the Johnson Funeral Home where memorial services were conducted by the Jr. OUAM Sunday evening. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Morgan County War Memorial Hospital or the Hott Bible Class of First UM Church.1

Paul Medford "P.M." Ruppenthal, 91, of Martinsburg, died Friday, February 2, 1996 at his home. Born January 20, 1905, in Morgan County, he was the son of the late Henry and Ida Iden Ruppenthal. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Helena Hoffman Ruppenthal on November 27, 1995. He was a well-known Martinsburg businessman, having been the owner and operator of Fleetwood Gas Distributors; owner and developer of the North End Airport; builder and developer of Sky-Lyn Park and one of the original founders of the Opequon Public Service District and various other projects. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as deacon and a member of the board of trustees. He also was a member of U.C.T.
He is survived by one daughter, Phyllis jean Smith of Virginia Beach, Va; two sons, Medford Paul Ruppenthal of Martinsburg, and Samuel Henry Ruppenthal of Sunrise, Fla; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter. As the last member of his immediate family he was preceded death by three sisters, Claddie Noland, Frieda Morgret and Oakla Funderburg; and six brothers, Lester, Virgil, Rev. Harry P., Ercel B., Henry and Floyd. Services were held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, February 5, at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, with the Rev. Robert S. Hill Jr. officiating. Burial was in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg.6

Her affliction, with complications, proved fatal. The remains were removed to her home by Funeral Director C.L. Hunter. The deceased, who is the mother of four children, was a Miss Cain before marriage, daughter of Edward Cain.4

Thomas William Householder, of Route 2, Berkeley Springs, died Thursday, November 3, in City Hospital, Martinsburg. He was born in Morgan County Jun 7, 1889, a son of the late Charles Thomas and Rosanna McBee Householder. He was a saw mill employee.
Surviving are his wife, the former Violet Starliper, at the home; four daughters, Lena Michael, Winchester, Va., Marie Reed, Big Pool, Md., Eleanor Hedges, Jones Spring, and Melvie Armstrong, Front Royal, Va; two sons, William P. Householder, Hedgesville, and Lester Householder, New Mexico; one step-son, Paul Yost, Martinsburg; two sisters, Mary LaFollette, Berkeley Springs, and Clara Cain, Berkeley Springs; two brothers, Jerry Householder, Berkeley Springs and Ray Householder, Rochester, N.Y., 22 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, November 6 at 2:00 p.m. at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Henry Fisher officiating, assisted by Gary Kerns. Interment was in the Mt. Zion Cemetery.1
