Eli Curtis1

M, b. circa 1791, d. between 1833 and 1837
FatherWilliam Curtis2 b. c 1770, d. c Mar 1845
MotherEdith (Edy) Cottrell3 b. 1770, d. bt 1851 - 1860
Last Edited16 Feb 2013
Birth*Eli Curtis was born circa 1791 at Wilkes, North Carolina; (or Randolph) He most likely was the son of William and Edy (Cottrell) Curtis. Per descendants, there is no record that he had a middle name, and it is unlikely, given that there is only one Curtis born before 1800 who may have had a middle name. Eli's first three children were named William, Joshua & Mary (Edy). Posey County court records show numerous relationships between Eli and William, although no record found states a relationship.4,5
Marriage*He married Jane (?) circa 1812 at Tennessee; possibly Ohio; no marriage record, estimated from first child's date of birth.1
NoteB* In 1816 Eli Curtis was charged with assault and battery on William York. Witnesses listed were William Curtis and Andrew McFadding. In an apparently related action, William York of Big Creek Twp. was charged with assault and battery on Eli Curtis.6
Land Purch* On 18 May 1816 Eli Curtis purchased land at Mount Vernon, Posey, Indiana, from John and Nancy Wagner for $84, described as three town lots in Wagners part of the Town of Mount Vernon on the Ohio River, each lot containing 1/4th acre (spelling were Curtice and Wagner/Waggoner.)7
Land Sale* On 10 February 1817 Eli Curtis sold land at Mount Vernon, Posey, Indiana, to Joshua Curtice, the three town lots against which he owed $90 to Samuel Kimble and guaranteed by Joshua Curtice; in addition to the lots, Eli also pledged most of his worldly possessions in the event he was unable to pay off the note to Kimble. The Joshua in question appears more likely to be William's son than Joshua Kel, who was not involved in the various Curtis transactions as far as I can tell.8
CensusHe appeared on the census of 1820 at Humphreys, Tennessee, page 208, 2 males and 1 female under 10, 1 male and 1 female 26-44; one person engaged in agriculture.2
CensusHe appeared on the census of 1830 at Humphreys, Tennessee, page 307, 1 male and 1 female under 5, 1 female 5-9, 1 female 10-14, 2 males 15-19, 1 male and 1 female 30-39.9
Land Entry*He entered land in 1831 at Humphreys, Tennessee, 100 acres, M district, grant no. 10342.10
Land EntryHe entered land in 1831 at Humphreys, Tennessee, 100 acres, M district, grant no. 10348.10
Death*He died between 1833 and 1837 at Humphreys, Tennessee; Jane appears on the 1838 tax list; prior tax lists are not available; last child was born in 1833.1,11
(Witness) BioFamily lore tells that Eli got on a riverboat sometime in the 1830s and never returned. One version says that his oldest child was born after he left; that would be Eli T. Curtis, born in 1833. The Tennessee River forms the western boundary of Humphreys County. Whether Eli worked on a riverboat prior to his departure is unknown. Finally, there is said to be a record of Eli Curtis in Lauderdale County, Tennessee, which is where his eldest son William moved prior to 1840.5
