Eva Marie Curtis Underwood, 86, 518 Camp Branch Road, Waynesville, died Wednesday June 1, 1983 in the Haywood County Hospital. She was a native of Haywood County and the daughter of the late Moses and Cecelia Evans Curtis and wife of the late Ellis Underwood. Surviving are a daughter, Edith Campbell of Waynesville; two sons, Roy Underwood of Jacksonville, Florida and Melvin Underwood of Hazelwood; 11 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren. Services were held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Garrett Funeral Chapel, the Revs. Carl Presnell and Raymond Blanton officiating, with burial in Green Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were Louis, Frank, Charlie, Edward and Rufus Curtis and James Gaddy.11

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Garrett Funeral Home. The Rev. Carl Presnell will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Harriett Curtis Underwood, 58, of Waynesville RD 3, died in the local hospital Sunday afternoon following a long illness. She was the daughter of the late Moses and Cedilla Evans Curtis of Haywood County. Mrs. Underwood at the time of her death was a member of the Ratcliffe Cove Baptist Church. She was a member of the Gold Star Mothers of the Waynesville American Legion Post No. 147.
Surviving are the husband, Jerry C. Underwood; two daughters, Mrs. John Webb of Waynesville RFD, and Miss Lucille Underwood of the home; one sister, Mrs. Ella Underwood of Waynesville; two brothers, Nelson Curtis of Waynesville and Tom Curtis of Culbertson; and four grandchildren. Services will be held in the Ratcliffe Cove Baptist Church, Tuesday; at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Gay Chambers officiating, assisted by the Rev. Raymond Blanton. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Monte and Melvin Underwood, Frank and Bruce Curtis, Mark Palmer and Turner Gaddy.8

Rufus Curtis Sr., 90, of Allens Creek Road, Waynesville, died Sunday, Feb 8, 1998, at Cape Fear Memorial Hospital in Wilmington, while visiting his daughter. He was born in Haywood County and was a son of the late Charlie and Mary Mull Curtis. Mr. Curtis was a retired dairy farmer with the N.C. Mountain Research of Waynesville with 27 years of service. He was married to the late Fannie Trull Curtis, who died in 1978. He was also preceded in death by a son, Robert Lee Curtis and two daughters, Margaret and Annie Jane Curtis.
He is survived by six daughters, Amelia Mullinax of Wilmington, Frances Rhinehart, Edna Crawford, Mary McClure, Carolyn Curtis and Marie Edwards, all of Waynesville; two sons, Rufus Curtis, Jr. of Asheville and Eugene Curtis of Reisterstown, Md; two sisters, Minnie Williams of Sylva and Leona Fisher of Sylva; a brother, Glenn Curtis of Waynesville; 34 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren; and nine great great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday at the Francis Cove United Methodist Church with the Revs. Hal Finney, Steve Rhinehart, and Kenneth Rhinehart officiating. Burial in Green Hill Cemetery.6

Kannapolis – Frank Curtis, 90, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2007, at Five Oaks Manor of Kannapolis. A native of Haywood County, 22 Curtis Drive in Waynesville, he was the son of Jess and Jessie McCracken Curtis. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Mildred Messer Curtis who died June 8, 2002 and a daughter, Darlene Jolley who died Aug. 24, 2007. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Bruce and Bill Curtis and sisters, Susie Arrington and Barbara Fleming. He retired from Unagusta and worked in retirement at Bi Lo's of Waynesville. He was a member of Pleasant Balsam Baptist Church.
He is survived by two sons, Thomas Curtis and his wife, Karen Hammett, and Skipper Curtis and his wife, Janice, of Waynesville; one daughter, Donna C. Rodgers and her husband, Sonny Rodgers, of Kannapolis; one brother, Joe Curtis and his wife, Janie, of Waynesville. He is survived by a number of grandchildren, stepgrandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-greatgrandchild.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Balsam Baptist Church with the Revs. Virgil Holloway and Ted Reeves officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Garrett Funerals and Cremations. Burial will be held at Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park.5

Survivors include his widow, Vernice; at the Winlock family home; two sons, Norman D., Winlock; Archie F., San Francisco, Calif; two daughters, Mrs. Sandra Jorgensen, Minneapolis, Minn; Longview; two brothers, Glen, Hoquiam; Vern, Aberdeen; and one sister, Mrs. Dorothy Schlitz, Delano, Calif. Services will be Wednesday at the Cattermole Funeral Chapel, Winlock with the Rev. Don Houtchens officiating. Burial will follow in the Winlock Cemetery.4
