ObitFranklin's obituary was published in the Oakland Acorn on 14 January 1926:

Aged Man Dies in Fall From Horse
Former Pioneer of Wheeler's Grove and Oakland Meets Accidental Death Near Woodbine
Franklin Field, a pioneer of the Wheeler's Grove neighborhood and later a resident near Oakland, met his death near Woodbine Saturday in a fall from a horse. Mr. Field was a brother of Mrs. Sophronia Beezley of this city.
He left his home in Magnolia Friday to put his horses in a stalk field near Woodbine, spending the night with an old friend. Within a few miles of Woodbine he stopped to inquire of a man the best road. The man directed him and was still looking when the horse Mr. Field was leading did not start up quick enough and Mr. Field toppled to the road. The man said he was at his side within a few minutes, but Field was dead. The doctor said his neck was broken in the fall.
Mr. Field was born in Franklin county, Ohio, Jan. 27, 1840, and moved with his parents to Wheeler's Grove, Iowa, in 1851, where he grew to manhood with the pioneers. He then moved to Big Grove, settling on part of what is now the Piles place. He was married to Almira Peckinpaw, in June, 1875. To this union were born six children, four boys and two girls: Mrs. Nora Burb [Burke] and Ray Field of Council Bluffs, Alice Spence of Dow City, and Jay of Magnolia. The wife and two eldest boys preceded him in death. Following the fatal accident the remains were taken to the home of his daughter at Dow City. Funeral services were held at the L.D.S. church, Rev. F. Fry officiating, and the body was laid beside that of his wife in the Dow City Cemetery.10

Marriage*Nelson Curtis Field married Jennie E. Buffington on 7 January 1890 at Glenwood, Mills, Iowa; Married: Field-Buffington-- A small circle of relatives and friends witnessed the marriage of Mr. N.C. Field and Miss Jennie Buffington, the charming daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F.M. Buffington. Last Sabbath morning just after the pastor of the M. E. Church had finished his morning discourse, he walked down the aisle and gently led the above named parties to the altar where the marriage was solemnized. The marriage reception was at the home of the bride's parents. It began at 1 o'clock and until about 3 the party were still eating.
No words can do justice to the fair bride. As a child, maiden and young lady she has always been a universal favorite. Her sweetness of disposition and charming manners are well known to her friends. Mr. Field is a gentleman well known and needs no introduction by us. He is every way worthy of the lovely wife he has won. Their future home will be in Ann Arbor, Mich., where Mr. Field his finishing his classical education.

(Witness) BioNELSON CURTIS FIELD.
In the promotion and conservation of advancement in all the normal lines of human progress and civilization there is no factor which has exercised a more potent influence than the press, which is both the director and the mirror of public opinion. Glenwood has been signally favored in the character of its newspapers, which have been vital, enthusiastic and progressive, even aiming to advance the interests of this favored section of the Union, to aid in laying fast and sure the foundations of an enlightened commonwealth, to further the ends of justice and to uphold the banner of Iowa. In a compilation of this nature then it is clearly incumbent that due recognition be accorded the newspaper press of the state. One of the capable representatives of the press in Mills county is Nelson Curtis Field.
A native son of the Hawkeye state, he has always been closely identified with its interests and has labored earnestly for its welfare along many lines. He was born in Pottawattamie county, April 13, 1868, a sort of Arminius J. and Aurelia (Sellers) Field. His boyhood days were spent upon his father's farm, and while he worked in the fields in the summer months, aiding in plowing, planting and harvesting, in the winter season he improved the opportunities for education afforded by the common schools. Desirous of enjoying more advanced privilege, he continued farm work until he had earned money sufficient to enable him to enter school elsewhere. He matriculated in the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and was graduated in the literary department with the degree of Bachelor of Arts, being the youngest member of the class of 1890, numbering one hundred and fifty graduates in the literary department. He afterward engaged in school-teaching for a year, and then turned his attention to journalistic work, in 1891 establishing the Mills County Tribune, of which he has since been the editor and proprietor, conducting the paper with continuous success up to the present time. He began the publication of this journal in connection with N. T. Bradway, who soon withdrew from the firm, however, being succeeded by F. M. Buffington, who retired from the business in 1895, leaving Mr. Field the sole owner. This journal is creditable to the city and county in which it is published, and is an excellent news organ and advertising medium. Its circulation is constantly increasing and its business affairs are in a prosperous condition.
Since the first year in which lie attended college Mr. Field has given his political support to the Democracy. Believing firmly in its principles, he strongly supports its doctrines and upholds its banner. He was made a candidate for state senator on the Democratic ticket in the senatorial district composed of Mills and Montgomery counties, but was defeated on account of the overwhelming Republican majority in the district. He began business about nine years ago with no capital, but through his paper and other judicious investments he has become one of the must successful citizens of the community and today owns seven fine farms, aggregating one thousand and fifteen acres, besides a large amount of town property which brings to him a good income. All that he has acquired is the reward of his well-directed labors guided by sound business judgment, and his life stands an exemplification of what may be accomplished through determined purpose.
Mr. Field is a member of the Congregational church. On the 7th of January, 1890, he was united in marriage to Miss Jennie Buffington, a member of one of the oldest and most influential families in Mills county, but their happy married life was of short duration, for Mrs. Field passed away in the following May. One of Mr. Field's contemporaries in the journalistic field has given us the following pen picture: "Mr. Field is an exceptionally bright and brainy young man, of scrupulously clean and temperate habits. He makes a success of whatever he undertakes. He is universally acknowledged to be one of the brightest and ablest newspaper men in the state, and now that he enters the political field, we predict for him a successful career." Another journalist said: "Mr. Field is a man of marked individuality, of strong purpose and remarkable energy."

Another major newspaper was started in Glenwood July 31, 1872, when C.W. Sherman established The Mills County Journal as a supporter of the liberal wing of the Democratic party. It enjoyed good financial success and for a while, put out a daily edition, a very ambitious undertaking in so small a community. In 1891 its name was changed to The Mills County Tribune and it then published two issues a week. It had a succession of editors and publishers. One of the most colorful, and successful, was Nelson Curtis "Nancy" Field, handsome, feisty writer who took over the paper the year that its name was changed from The Journal. Mr. Field published all of the news he could find, including the filing of divorce suits, and since in those days marriages were not dissolved unless there were adequate grounds, such suits often made lurid charges. Sometimes the litigants were offended by such publicity and for many years it was legendary that Editor Field occasionally had to dodge dissatisfied parties, some of whom came after him with a horse whip, a favorite non-lethal weapon of that day. But he prospered to an unusual extent, also having the sound judgement to marry a member of one of the county's most influential families, Miss Jennie Buffington, who, unfortunately, died only four months after their vows were solemnized.

(Witness) BioJACOB BIRD.

Jacob Bird has for more than half a century been a resident of Franklin county, whither he came in 1849, taking up his abode in Sharon township, where he purchased sixty?nine acres of land and began farming. He was born in Pennsylvania, February 22, 1815, his parents being Albertus and Rebecca (Woolever) Bird, who had a family of nine children.
The subject of this review spent his early life in his native county of Northumberland, and when a youth accompanied his parents to Knox county, Ohio, the family locating upon a farm, where he grew to manhood. After arriving at years of maturity he wedded Miss Kesiah Craig, who was born in that county December 3, 1817, their marriage being celebrated on the 9th of March, 1836 She is one of the oldest living of Ohio's native citizens. Her parents were both of Knox county. Her father, James Craig, was born in the Keystone state and came to Ohio when the Indians were yet numerous. He built a log cabin, which was the first home erected in Mt. Vernon. The journey from Pennsylvania had been made with a team and wagon, and he also brought with him a drove of sheep. He was a farmer by occupation, and in Knox county he entered large tracts of land, which he afterward developed and improved. There he made his home throughout his remaining days, taking an active part in reclaiming the wild country for purposes of civilization. He had been one of the founders of the Republic, for after the inauguration of the war of the Revolution he unhitched his horses from the plow where he was working in the fields and went at once to the seat of war, taking part in many engagements which resulted in winning independence for the American people. His wife, prior to her marriage, bore the name of Esther Ann Cavin. They became the parents of ten children, two of whom were born in Pennsylvania, and came with the parents to Ohio. Mrs. Bird, however, is now the only surviving member of the family.
After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Bird continued to reside in Knox county for a number of years, and in 1849 came to Franklin county, securing a tract of wild land in the midst of the forest, where there were no roads and where the work of progress and improvement had not yet been begun. Mr. Bird at once erected a log cabin, into which he moved his family, then consisting of his wife and four children, namely: James, who died when five years of age; Phebe, who became tile wife of Walter Burwell; John; and Jemimah, wife of William Stevens, who is now in Indian Territory. After the arrival of the family in Franklin county the following children were born: David; Mary, who wedded Presley Field and is living in Abilene, Texas; Lavina, wife of Benjamin Spengler, of Columbus; Jacob, who died when eighteen months old; Nancy J., wife of John L. Ballinger, of Columbus; Chauncey, who resides in Goff, Kansas; William M., who is living on the old homestead; and Martha Ellen, widow of Silas Dague.
After coming to Franklin county, Mr. Bird engaged in the operation of a sawmill for a time, but later cleared his farm and made his home thereon throughout his remaining days. He was a member of the Methodist church and took a very active interest in religious work. As a citizen he was interested in everything pertaining to the welfare, promotion and progress of the community and heartily co-operated in all measures for the general good.
His death occurred May 26. 1886.
