ObitJames Hugh's obituary was published in the Daily Post Athenian on 24 September 2004:
James Hugh Ross, 83, died at his residence in Etowah on Friday, Sept. 24, 2004. Born on Jan. 15, 1921, at Cole’s Crossing in Fannin County, Ga., he was a son of the late Rosa Davis and George Everett Ross.
He moved to Etowah as a small child when his father was transferred there by L&N Railroad and he resided in McMinn County for the remainder of his life. He proudly served his country as the radio operator on a B-17 Bomber in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. While on a bombing mission in North Africa, his plane was shot down over Tunisia on Jan. 3, 1943. He was immediately captured by the Germans and spent the remainder of the war in Nazi prison camps, much of that time being spent at the infamous Stalag XVII-B in Krems, Austria. He was liberated on May 3, 1945, by forces of the 3rd U.S. Army under the command of General Patton. Shortly after his return to his home in the Goodsprings community, he met and soon thereafter married his wife, Helen Ruth Bryan. They would have celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary on Oct. 21, 2004.

A lifelong Republican, he was elected as the McMinn County Property Assessor in 1948 and served one term in that office. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed by President Eisenhower as the postmaster of the Englewood Post Office, where he served until his retirement. He resided in Englewood for many years, where he and his family attended the Englewood First Baptist Church. He taught Sunday school for many years and served as a deacon. After his retirement, he and his wife moved back to Etowah, where they became active members of the Etowah First Baptist Church. He is remembered by many friends from both of those communities and from both of those churches. He was a charter member of the Englewood Lions Club and was recently honored for being a member of the Englewood Manilla Lodge No. 633 for more than 50 years.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Bryan Ross; two daughters and sons-in-law, Glenda Ross and Paul Baxter of Knoxville, and Cathy and Doyle McNabb of Cleveland; two sons, Carroll Ross of Etowah, and Johnny Ross of Brooklyn, N.Y; five grandchildren, Mary Helen Smith, Julia Smith, Michael Smith, Catherine Maples, and Elizabeth Torbett and husband, Jonathan; two great-grandchildren, Ashlyn Torbett and Makayla Maples, daughter of Adam Maples; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Marie Malone, Edna and Ed Davis and Phyllis and Andy Leslie, all of the Goodsprings community, and Genevie Reed of Rockford; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles and Edna Ross of the Goodsprings community, and Wayne and Bess Ross of DeFuniak Springs, Fla; special friend, Wayne Quinn, husband of Hazel Quinn, who is the sister of Helen Ross; several other brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Monday at Bordwine Funeral Home with his pastor, Shaun King, of the Etowah First Baptist Church, and his former pastor and friend of many years, James A. Hoyal, officiating and concluding with the Celebration of Life video. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 9 a.m. Tuesday and proceed to Green Hill Cemetery for the 10 a.m. graveside service, which will conclude with the White Dove Liberation Ceremony. Pallbearers will be Rixey Quinn, James Bryan, Adam Maples, Michael Smith, Jeff Davis and Joshua Ross.5
