Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Rankin, 85, of 2003 Duncan Avenue, died at a local sanitarium Thursday following a several months' illness. She is survived by two sons, M. D. Rankin, of Bridgeport, Ala., and J. W. Rankin, of this city, and a sister, Mrs. Margarete Kennedy, of Swift, Mo., and five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Rankin was born in Sequatchie county and resided in this city for twenty-five years. she was a member of the Central Church of Christ.
Funeral services conducted by the Rev. Raymond G. Sherrer of the Highland Park Christian church will be held Saturday morning at 10 o'clock at the funeral home of Page-Hancock. The body will be taken to Pikeville where another service will be conducted by the Rev. Mr. Pullis at the grave. Pallbearers will be E. A. Rankin (Edward Alexander Rankin - grandson), E. B. Worth (unknown relationship), L. B. Rankin (grandson - Leland B. Rankin), G. W. Rankin (Glenn W. Rankin - grandson), S. A. Hill (unknown relationship) and J. M. Young’s grocery—modern for the late 1800’s, with glass-covered showcases and well-stocked shelves, boasted a lunch counter where hungry customers could purchase a penny’s worth of cheese and crackers. He also traded in produce and bought and sold rabbits. [picture]
The young children, their spouses and their children, were as follows; (1) Jason married Addie Ward—children Cecil and Aloth; (2) Charley married Esther Fletcher—children Olea, Eva, Joe, Carl, Zetta, Jessie, Charley, Boyd and Francis; (3) Docia married Tolbert Matlock—children Hugh, Eula, Leon, Bernis, Loman; (4) Chester married Bessie Bouser; (5) Hosea married Stella Hickman—children Woodrow, Vance, Novella and Geneva; (6) Roy married Florence Wolf--one son, Zale; (7) Thona married Roy Coday—they had one daughter, Lucille. After Roy passed away, Thona married Homer Huffstetler. Their children were Vernis, Harold and Don; (8) Clarence married Vava Eaton—children Ann, Dearles, Lowell, June and Ted; (9) Elsie married Luther Huffstetler—children Fewel and Dorothy; (10) Macie married Homer Mallory—children Alice and Bill; (11) Lela married Willis Huffstetler, a brother to Luther and Homer.
Sampson Young’s grocery was east of the courthouse square on Highway 38 near the Hartville Milling Company Plant. His home, where he and Brazalia raised their brood of eleven, is a block farther east just off 38 and is now the residence of the granddaughter Novella and her husband, Champ. . . .4
