Death*John E. Curtis died on 9 March 1945 at age 23; WWII veteran, buried at Black's Cemetery.2
ObitJohn E.'s obituary was published in the Western Star on 22 November 1945:
In colorful ceremonies at Camp Breckinridge, Ky., Sunday, the Army Bronze Star, posthumously awarded Pvt. John E. Curtis, was presented his father, Herman Curtis of Mt. Vernon. Attending the presentation from her in addition to Mr. Curtis were Mrs. Curtis and the Gold Star's three sisters, Miss Betty Curtis, Mrs. Adriel Schaffer and Mrs. Carl Keitel and the families of the two latter. Pvt. Curtis, a member of the US Army Cavalry, was killed in action near Antipolo, Luzon Island, Philippines, last March 9 and his heroic death was revealed in the citation which was read at the presentation of the bronze Star. The citation follows: "For heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy near Antipolo, Luzon Island, Philippine Islands, on 9 March 1945. Private Curtis, with three others members of his squad, was attempting to outflank a strong enemy position near Antipolo, when deadly rifle fire and machine gun fire from the enemy defenders made further advance practically impossible.
"Realizing the extreme danger to the three men whom he was leading, Pvt. Curtis ordered them to rejoin their platoon. He elected to remain at his post and divert the enemy fire while his comrades reached safety. He directed continuous rifle fire upon the enemy until the members of his squad had rejoined the platoon. In an effort to effect his own escape, Private Curtis was mortally wounded. In performing this act, he gave his life for the cause for which he was so nobly fighting and that those whom he loved might live."3
