Stephen L. Curtis, 82, of 307 South Ninth St., died at 8 a.m. today in his home. He had been ill for two years. He was born Sept. 30, 1884, in Montrose, W. Va., a son of the late John C. and Elizabeth Murphy Curtis, and had lived on Ninth St. since 1960. For many years he lived in South Connellsville. He retired in 1950 as a Baltimore and Ohio Railroad engineer, after 45 years of service. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, the Baltimore and Ohio Veterans Assn., and a social member of the South Connellsville Vol. Fire Dept.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Anna C. Groh Curtis; two sons, Stanley L. of Milan, Ill., and Robert G. with the U.S. Army at Carlisle Barracks, Carlisle; three daughters, Mrs. Stephen P. (Virginia) Marric of Parker, Pa; Mrs. Clare A. Turk at home and Mrs. Anthony (Elaine) Mascioli of Connellsville; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, W.J. Curtis of Connellsville, and two sister, Mrs. John (Cordelia) Long of Charleston, W. Va., and Mrs. Gay (Carrie) McElroy of Chicago, Ill. He was preceded in death by three daughters, Mildred and Doris and another in infancy. The body will be at the Brooks funeral home after 6 p.m. Tuesday. The funeral will be held there at 11 a.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Ralph Arnold officiating. Interment will be in Chestnut Hill Cemetery.8
