Born to Scott and Beatrice WILSON SROUFE in Macy, he lived his entire life in the house in which he was born. He married Georgianna M. JONES on Oct. 15, 1928 in Macy. She preceded him in death on March 4, 1991. Sroufe was a 1923 graduate of Macy High School and never missed a class reunion. He was a member of the Macy Christian Church for 79 years where he served as trustee and deacon. He served in the organization of the Pearsons Mill Christian Camp, later named the Rainbow Christian Camp, Converse. He served as Allen Township trustee for 10 years, and was a member of North Miami Community School Board during its consolidation. He was a retired farmer. He served several years on the Miami County Fair Board and with Miami County Farm Bureau. Survivors include two sons, Tom and wife Alice [SROUFE], Macy, and Mark J. and wife Joyce [SROUFE], Rochester; one daughter, Beth NICODEMUS, Silver Lake; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Martha GALLIPO and Catherine DUEY. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at McClain Funeral Home, Denver. Rev. David WELSH will officiate. Burial will be at Plainview Cemetery, Macy. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Monday and 9-11 a.m. Tuesday. Memorials may be made to Macy Christian Church or Rainbow Christian Camp Building Fund.3

Word has been received of the death of Phillip A. DUEY, 81, Chapel Hill, N.C., who died at his home Wednesday. He was born June 22, 1901, in Miami County to Alfred and Mary [GRELLE] DUEY. He married Catharine SROUFE in 1926 at Bloomington, Ind. He graduated from Indiana University and Columbia University. He spent 20 years in radio in New York City and 22 years as director of the glee club at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Surviving with the wife are a daughter and seven grandchildren. Survivors in the Fulton County area are Robert RUNKLE, Akron, Clara Mae WINEGARDNER and Claude BERGER, both of Macy; and brother-in-law, Russel SROUFE, Macy; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Dwight GALLIPO, Rochester. A son preceded in death.3

Mrs. Merley died at 10:05 a.m. Monday in the Rochester nursing home, where she had resided for three years. She had been in failing health for three years. Until retiring at the age of 75 on Jan. 4, 1971, Mrs. Merley had been a newspaper linotype operator for 56 years. The linotype was a typesetting machine used in the “hot metal” process of producing newspapers that has been supplanted largely by the photographic method now used by most newspapers, including The Rochester Sentinel. Mrs. Merley began her linotype career in 1914 at the former Warsaw Union and also worked at The Akron News, The News-Sentinel (now The Rochester Sentinel), The Remington Press and The North Judson News before retiring in 1962 at the age of 65. In 1968, she came out of retirement to work for The Sentinel for another three years before retiring for the second time in 1971. Mrs. Merley was born April 1, 1896 near Rochester to Therman D. and Flora R. CLEMANS SMITH and had resided most of her life in Fulton county. She was married in Fulton county on Sept. 14, 1918 to Nyle MERLEY, who died June 6, 1973. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. George (Martha Jean) HENNING, Waukesha, Wis; Mrs. Ronald C. (Joanne) HILES, R.R. 4, Rochester, and Mrs. Edwin (Patricia Lou] JOHNSON, Metamora, Ill. two sons, Robert Dean MERLEY, New Carlisle, and Ted MERLEY, R.R. 1, Macy; fourteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Hazel CARTER, Van Nuys, Cal., and a brother, Ralph SMITH, R.R. 4, Rochester.
