(Witness) Bio22 THE CARPENTER HOUSE
If walls could talk and rocks could recall, we could hear a running history of the generations of the Alec Carpenter family since before the Civil War. Since walls don't talk and rocks can't remember, we have talked with descendants of the Carpenter family to reconstruct some historical facts about one of the earliest families and one of the two oldest homes in Maggie Valley.
The Carpenter house stands in its original location without renovation' and is bordered by ancient apple trees and rock fences. The other cabin originally was the log cabin of Amos Plott and now stands at the forks of Johnson Branch and Campbell’s Creek.
The Carpenter homestead yet stands high on Sheepback Mountain along the banks of Carpenter Branch which flows into Jonathan Creek. The original deed of the first Carpenter land was recorded in 1859 from J. Robed Love to Johnny Carpenter who purchased it for $100. Part of the Love speculation lands, the plat description records that it was boundaried by the Amos Plott lands to a rock on the side of Sheepback Mountain. After this tract was deeded to Alec in 1866, Alec continued to buy up lands for from 50¢ to $1.50 an acre. He was a stonemason and mom than 323 acres were recorded in his name.
Johnny Carpenter was the father of Alec and came to Maggie Valley from Catawba County, which was also the origin of the Setzers and Campbells. Five generations of Carpenters and their descendants lived here until Robert Elmore of Florida purchased the place.
The homestead has so much character that Exxon Oil Corp. chose a photo of it to be used in their advertising. The house now has two stories with two chimneys, one at each end of the house. There are three rooms upstairs and three downstairs, and Iwo small rooms at each end of the front porch. The spring house is still usable, and the fields in front of the house have the old, gnarled apple trees which served the family for over a century. The Carpenters had a grape arbor, and fruit trees and berries of every description. Mrs. Nathan "Lizzie" Carver believes the original section of the house was built about 1860 by Johnny and Catherine Shuford Carpenter. The second story was added after Johnny and Alec returned from the Civil War. The Carpenters had 3 children' Belt who married George Sutton, L. Alec who married Viney Curtis, a niece of Sarah Darit, the second wife of Amos Plott, and Charlie who married Talitha Palmer of Cataloochee.
Alec and Viney moved into the house and reared 7 children to adulthood. They were Sarah who married Jerome Moody; John who married Burdine Palmer of Cataloochee; Pink who remained single; Rhoda who married John Henry, a grandson of Capt. John Henry, the only Rev. War soldier to be buried in Maggie Valley; Clan who married Liza Fie and who sold Beech Mountain property for the development of Ghost Town; Lillie who married General Fie; and Talitha who married George Rich.
In addition to their own children, Alec and Viney reared 5 others. Their son John's wife, Burdine, died in 1899, leaving 4 daughters who are Mrs. Lizzie Carver and Mrs. Bessie Cagle, both of Hemphill: and Mrs. Mamie Fie and Mrs. Willie Lewis, both of Maggie Valley. The girls went to live with their grandparents. John later remarried and a son, Johnny Carpenter, was born to this marriage. He too lived with his grandparents, and he still lives on Carpenter Branch section of the original Carpenter lands.
Alec was a rock mason, his work being evidenced by the chimneys at the Owens home-place and the retaining walls at Nannie Ptott's house on the Old Soco road. He and Viney are buried in the Henry Cemetery in Maggie Valley behind Grady Henry's. The tombstones list Viney's date of birth as April, 1843, and date of death as April 15, 1926. Alec is listed as A. L. and only his date of birth, Aug. 12. 1840, is recorded. He died in 1930 at the age of 90.
Alec was known as a pleasant man with great affection for his wife, Viney. Mamie Fie, his granddaughter, remembered her life at his home on Sheepback Mountain. The beds were corded and had feather ticking for mattresses. An old chest that was originally a wedding gift to Alec and Viney has an interesting history. In 1950 it was stored in a farm building along the banks of Hemphill Creek when a flash flood hit. The chest was swept away and washed downstream about 100 yards. It was recovered, and restored to its original finish, a mellow maple.
Each child in the household had specific chores. Mamie Fie said that Grandma Viney was very exacting about the whiteness of the wash. She supervised Mamie arid her 3 sisters as they heated water and battled or beat the clothes with a battling board. The clothes were then spread on hushes to dry, and at that time Mrs. Carpenter would notice if they were clean; if not, it was back to the battling board until they were clean.
Like many mountain men. Alec had a long beard and hair. He didn't cut his toenails, and they grew around and under his toes. Not caring for shoes, his toenails made a clicking sound hitting the wooden floor.
Generations have come and gone — yet the old log mountain home still stands. It is not possible to list all the descendants of Alec Carpenter in this article, yet they have and will contribute much to our American way of life.
