Obit | Rufina A.'s obituary was published in the Unknown Newspaper on 25 September 1904: Mrs. Rufina A. Curtis, aged 60 years, was struck and killed yesterday morning by an engine in the Midland yards of this city. At about 8:30 o’clock, as the through passenger train was pulling into Victor, Mrs. Curtis, who had been down town purchasing groceries, was walking along the tracks on her way to her home on Diamond Avenue. Just as the lady was leaving the cut west of Fifth Street, the train rounded a curve, and before Mrs. Curtis had time to step from the right-of-way she was struck by the engine and thrown about ten feet. The engineer at once noticed the accident and the train was immediately brought to a standstill. The fireman and brakeman gently raised the injured lady from the ground and carried her to the home of her son on Diamond Avenue, Victor. Drs. Elliott and Van Der Schouw were summoned and quickly arrived on the scene, but it was impossible to save the woman’s life and she died at exactly 9:45 [?] a.m. The extent of her injuries was a fractured skull, broken shoulder blade, right ear badly torn and perhaps a fracture of several ribs. Mrs. J.H. Curtain, who saw the engine strike Mrs. Curtis, told the coroner that when the train passed Seventh Street, the engineer neither blew the whistle nor rang the bell for the Fifth Street crossing. The lady stated that no notice of the approach of the train was given. Mrs. Curtis leaves nine children, three sons here, Joseph H., W.L. and H.E. J.H. Curtis is foreman at the Rio Grande sampler. She also has a daughter in the district, Mrs. Dora Hunbridge at Gillett. An inquest will be held Monday and the remains will probably be shipped to Denver for burial, as she had come here from Denver about three months ago.2 |
