Note* Mary A. Smith was the daughter of Samuel and Hannah Smith in Edward Co., IL. Mary was the youngest of three children that were left orphans. Their mother died and their father married again. They lived a while in Indiana. At the death of his second wife, Samuel Smith, their father, brought the family back to Edwards County. Soon after his return to Edwards County, he made a trip back to Indiana on horseback to look after his interest there and was never heard of again, leaving his three children orphans. Mary was taken into the home of John B. Curtis, where she was cared for and reared as one of their own children until her marriage to Albert Fewkees. Fred Smith, the oldest child was b. in England. He went into the Civil War, had measles and died there. Anna Smith, b. in England 6 Ju11850, found a home with Robert and Margaret Burrell. Then she was united in marriage to Robert Copeland. After the death of Albert Fewkes, Mary A. Smith was married to W. B. Jacques at Wapum, WI on 9 Sep 1912 where she lived until her death. Being an orphan herself, she could truly sympathize with others. She was a mother to Joseph Palmer, who she cared for from a little boy not old enough for school until he grew to manhood. She took him from the poor farm where his mother and father had left him. She also cared for f H. Burell who became an Episcopal minister. Mary was a faithful member of the Christian Church of Albion since 1892. She and Albert are buired in the Graceland cemetery, Albion, Illinois.
