SR., 80, of Holiday, died Sunday (March 30, 2003) at Helen Ellis Memorial Hospital, Tarpon Springs. Born in Detroit, he came here 25 years ago from Southgate, Mich. He was an engineering supply technician for Ford Motor Co., Dearborn, Mich., with 39 years of service. He was an Army veteran of World War II in Glider Service. He was a POW for eight months in Normandy. He was Baptist. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Helen C; two sons, Larry E., Livonia, Mich., and William H. Lapeer Jr., Holiday; a brother, Russell, Ocala; two sisters, Florence Halsey, Morenci, Mich., and Joan Bolash, Holiday; and seven grandchildren. Michels & Lundquist Funeral Home, New Port Richey.2 |
Obit | William Henry's obituary was published in the Tampa Tribune on 11 April 2003: HOLIDAY - Helen Lapeer spent more than six months after the D-Day invasion of Normandy not knowing whether her husband, Army Pfc. William Lapeer, was dead or alive. "It was awful," said Helen, 79, who lives in Holiday. "And when they did contact us, I was told he might have lost his leg and was a prisoner in Munich, Germany." William Lapeer, who died of pneumonia recently at 80, was an infantryman who was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division glider service that attacked the Germans at Normandy on June 6, 1944. "They were in a unit that was dropped from planes, and that was his first drop," Helen said. "They got him when he landed behind enemy lines." She had no knowledge of her husband's whereabouts until a telegram arrived New Year's Day and her father called the Missionary Alliance Church in Detroit, where she was seated in the first pew and about to lead the singing. "The Rev. Harold May got a phone call from my father and came out to tell everyone that he was alive," Helen said.
But she didn't learn about William's physical condition until months later, when he was released from the prison camp after eight months and flown to Miami to recuperate. "I stood there waiting for him, not knowing if he lost a leg," Helen said. "I ran to him and said, "Oh, you're here! And I'm so happy. And you're OK!' "He had his legs. But he had gone from 130 pounds to 85, and you could see all his bones. "He would never talk much at all about any of the war or his time as a prisoner of war." William worked 39 years as an engineering supply technician for the Ford Motor Co. in Dearborn, Mich. The Lapeers had two sons, William Jr., 54, of Holiday, and Larry, 56, of Kentucky, and were married 59 years. They moved to Holiday in 1980, months after his retirement from Ford. William also is survived by three siblings: Joan Bolash of Holiday; Russell Lapeer of Ocala; and Florence Halsey of Morenci, Mich.2 |
