I was born on December 3, 1867. I married Susan Stricklin at the age of 20 and to this union four sons were born. Three of them are still living: Harrison Bates, Lawrenceburg, Andrew Bates California and Amos Bates Nashvile. One son died at birth. My first wife died about 60 years ago. In 1901, I married Janie Morgan and to us nine children were born. Two boys, twins, died at birth and seven are still living, three boys and four girls. They are as follows: Mrs. Bertha McGuire (in) Ethridge, Willie Bates - Old Hickory, Tennessee, Mrs. Lorene Benefield of Summertown, Mrs. Annie Gilliam of Summertown, Mrs. Clara Whitfield of Nashville, Joseph Bates of Peoria, Illinois. HIST: My second wife passed away on February 26, 1956 and I now live alone at my home near Summertown with my dog Jack. HIST: As a child I walked four miles to a one teacher school. I have driven yokes of steers as a very young man and have done plowing with them. I made stave batts for a living and also made cross ties for $1.00 each. In addition, I have farmed most of my life. I feel the Lord had a reason for sparing my life on earth so long. It is only occasionally that I have to use a walking cane. I have been a member of the Church of Christ for about 70 years. J.W.
