(Witness) Bio | JOHN ALDERSON, SEN. No man of his day was more distinguished among the Baptists, than he whose name precedes this sketch. He was one of the earliest evangelical preachers of western Virginia. To him are many of the churches indebted under God for their existence and growth. He was born in Yorkshire, England, and came to this country when quite young. The circumstances under which he left his native land were peculiar. His father, a minister of useful talents, and respectable character, opposed, with considerable violence, a matrimonial connexion he was about to form. To divert the attention of his son from this alliance, he prevailed on him to travel, and furnished him with a horse and the requisite fluids. In a short time these means were exhausted, and the prodigal was at length bound on board a vessel, which brought him, without the consent or knowledge of his parents, to America. On arriving in this country, he was hired by the captain for his passage money to a respectable farmer of New Jersey by the name of Curtis. His conduct during his term of labor was such as to gain the esteem of Mr. Curtis. He afterwards married his daughter, and was highly respected by all with whom he became acquainted. A short period subsequent to his marriage, the subduing grace of God arrested him. - He became a joyful believer in Christ Jesus, and was baptized in his name. With his characteristic energy, he at-once began to recommend the Saviour to others. Having removed to Germantown, Penn., he continued in that vicinity to preach the gospel until the year 1755, when he removed to the county of Rockingham, Virginia. Upon his settlement in this state, he applied himself to the work of the ministry, and within twelve months a Baptist church was constituted, called Smith's and Lynville creek church, in the county of Rockingham. He became their pastor. This connexion was retained about sixteen years, when he removed to the county of Bottetourt. In the year 1781, about nine years after his removal, he was called to the rest of heaven.2 |

Obit | Ulysses Simpson Grant's obituary was published in the Unknown Newspaper on circa 19 December 1916: Ulysses S. Curtis. God often calls his best and strongest soldiers in the midst of the battle of life, and tells them to come up higher and receive their crown. Everyone was so surprised last Sabbath to learn that Bro. Curtis was no longer in this world. He passed away at his home near Glendale, Saline County, Kansas, Saturday evening, December 16, 1916, after he had given directions to his family what to do when he should leave them. A week before this he taught his family h ow to sing.—“Will Shout His Praise in Glory.”[verse omitted] Brother Curtis was born in Henry County, Iowa, September 20, 1869, and came to Kansas 45 years ago. He was only a child then two years old. After living in Cloud and Cherokee counties, Kansas, he came to this county 20 years ago. He married Antoinette Topping in Cherokee County, and there he was converted and joined the Christian church. Though he lived as a farmer most of his life he enjoyed living in Lincoln. He had six children living, and bore they could go to school and church. One of them is married, Mrs. Alma Gruber, of Abilene. He taught a Sabbath school class in the Lincoln Presbyterian church, and he loved the prayer meeting. The revival meetings just suited him, and work in the country with the Gospel team. He works hard in this way to save souls. His automobile carried a big load to meeting. He was always so cheerful, and like a boy, full of fun. The funeral services at the Lincoln Presbyterian church Monday, December 18th, were conducted by Rev. Nelson Rankin, his old Sabbath school teacher; Rev. Roy Hendrickson and Rev. H.C. Bradbury, and the church quartet. [text omitted] The burial was in the Lincoln cemetery. Many of his friends came to the funeral. Some from Saline County. Mrs. Curtis and children desire to return thanks to all who helped them.2 |
