Curtis, 83, longtime Weatherford Independent School District superintendent and community leader, died Friday, July 23, in a Fort Worth hospital facility. He was born Jan. 29, 1927 in Allen, Texas. He came to Weatherford in 1954 after a two-year stint in the United States Navy and graduation from University of North Texas in 1949. He served as superintendent of Allen ISD from 1950 to 1954. Mr. Curtis served as Weatherford ISD superintendent until his retirement in 1986. Obit | Raymond Eugene's obituary was published in the Courier-Gazette on 31 July 2010: Raymond Eugene "Gene" Curtis, superintendent of Allen ISD from 1950 to 1954, passed away due to health complications July 24 at the age of 83. Curtis was born Jan. 29, 1927 and graduated from Allen High School in 1944. After serving briefly in the Navy, he entered the teaching profession and became superintendent of Allen ISD in 1950. Benny Bolin, secretary of the Allen ISD Board of Trustees, said at a recent board meeting that Curtis was instrumental in preserving the district at a time when Collin County's superintendent of schools wanted to absorb Allen's school system into Plano. "Through Mr. Curtis' efforts through the school board, we stayed around and did not join with Plano as was the original intent," he said. Several of Curtis' relatives also worked for AISD. Curtis Middle School was named for his brother Walter, and longtime AISD service employee Matt Curtis was also his brother. Bob Curtis, Curtis' nephew and former facilities director for the district, graduated from AHS in 1964 and was one of Curtis' students during the early 1950s. "His philosophy was, there's not a throwaway kid," Bob said. "He wanted every kid to be successful in whatever endeavor that they tried to do. "What I remember most is him being a man of great character," Bob said. "You could look and see [at the service] the number of former students and people that were there to pay their final respects to him." After leaving Allen in 1954, Curtis became superintendent of Weatherford ISD before retiring in 1986. He then served on the Weatherford College Board of Trustees from 1991 to 2003. He also served as president of the Weatherford Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club for several years. Among those former students was Joe Tison, who graduated from Weatherford High School during Curtis' first year as superintendent. "He just built an atmosphere of a group of people in school all being friends with each other. Everybody knew everybody," Tison said. Thanks to Curtis' motivation and influence, Tison would go on to pursue a career in education. After college, Tison landed his first teaching job in Aledo. In 1965, Tison received a call from Curtis, who was looking to fill a teaching position in Weatherford. It was the start of a more than 20-year work relationship. "He was one of those people that was very genuine. You always knew that he cared about you, and he always spent his life serving this community," Tison said. In the early 1970s, Tison moved next door to Curtis and his family, where they were neighbors for more than 30 years. "He was my principal, my boss, my neighbor, my friend, and my mentor," Tison said. A service was held for Curtis' friends and family July 26 at Northside Baptist Church in Weatherford. Curtis was buried at Allen Cemetery later that day.4 |
