POWELL, 86, pioneer race horse breeder, of Green Oak, passed away 1 p.m. Sunday at Woodlawn Hospital, where he had been a patient for the past several weeks. He had been in failing health for over two years. Mr. Powell, who was internationally known as one of the finest breeders of race horses in the Mid-West had reared two pacers on his farm a mile and a half east of Green Oak which were and are holders of world records. These horses were known as Royal Lady and Lady Patch. The veteran turfman retired from the race horse breeding business less than a year ago on account of failing health. In his earlier days Mr. Powell raced his horses at the old Fulton county fairgrounds and other circuits throughout the midwest. One of his world record pacing marks was established on Rochester’s last race track which was located just east of Fansler addition. For the past score or more of years Mr. Powell traveled east every year where he sold his thoroughbred colts at auction in the big horse sales at New York, York, Pa. and Harrisonburg [?], Pa. These animals were trained on a half-mile track which “Farmer Powell” (as he was known to the turfmen) had built for the conditioning of his young pacers. Oliver Morton, son of William and Sarah (BIDDLE) POWELL was born April 16, 1865 in the Pleasant Hill neighborhood, nine miles southeast of Rochster. On April 20, 1899 he was married to Almeda SMOKER with the ceremony being pronounced by Rev. WILKINSON, at Macy. Mr. Powell took up the occupation of farming and soon afterward became interested in the breeding and training of race horses. He had resided on his farm, east of Green Oak, for over 61 years. Survivors are his wife, of near Green Oak; a son Ferman POWELL, of Lake Manitou; two daughters, Mrs. Ruth SMOKER, of near Kewanna; Mrs. Marie PUTNAM, of Akron; fifteen grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren. Mr. Powell was the last of a family of twelve children. Final rites will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Pleasant Hill church, with Rev. TAGGART of the Macy Methodist church officiating. Burial will be in the Akron I.O.O.F. cemetery. The body will be removed from the Moyer-Haupert Funeral Home in Akron to the Powell residence at 5 p.m. this evening where friends may call.2 |

Obit | Emma Belle's obituary was published in the Rochester Sentinel on 11 May 1928: Rochester friends of Mrs. Belle BABCOCK, of Akron, formerly a resident of Rochester township, were shocked to learn of her sudden death which occurred near 11 o’clock at her home on East Rochester street. Mrs. Conrad SINGPIEL, who with her husband reside with Mrs. Babcock, becoming alarmed by Mrs. Babcock’s absence from the house, at noon started to search the home and premises and found the body in the basement. Life had been extinct for almost an hour, it was estimated by physicians who were summoned. Death was caused by heart trouble, it being presumed the deceased had gone to the basement to obtain some household commodity in the preparation of her noon meal when stricken with the fatal attack. Belle [BRUMFIELD], daughter of Hiram and Mary Elizabeth BRUMFIELD, was born 62 years ago on a farm southeast of Rochester where she spent the major part of her life. Upon reaching womanhood she was united in marriage to Joseph BABCOCK and to this union one daughter, Mrs. Beatrice SELIGMAN, was born. The Babcocks continued their residence in the Mt. Taber neighborhood until about 12 years ago when they moved to Akron, Mr. Babcock preceding his wife in death three years ago. Mrs. Seligman is the only surviving member of the family. Funeral arrangements will be announced in Saturday’s issue of the News-Sentinel.3 |

(Witness) Bio | John G. Seybold, an old and respected citizens of Cass County, was born in Montgomery County, Ohio, September 11, 1824, son of John G., Sr., and Jacobina (Fullmer) Seybold, both of German extraction. Our subject was reared on his father's farm, received a common education, and at the age of twenty began life for himself as a farm hand. In his twenty-sixth year he married Ursula Munger, the nuptials being consummated July 19, 1849. Mrs. Seybold was born in Germany May 28, 1831, and when three years old came with her parents, Joseph and Mary (Rode) Munger, to the United States and located in Auglaize County, Ohio. Shortly after their marriage, they removed to Darke County, Ohio, where they lived until 1864, in which year they came to Cass County and settled on the farm where they now live. Mr. Seybold began at the bottom of the ladder and steadily worked his way upward. He now owns a fine farm of 287 acres adjoining the city of Logansport, and his possessions are the true reward of industry and economy, and his career is a good example of what may be attained by well-directed diligence. Eleven children were born to him: George, born April 30, 1850; Sarah J., born August 30, 1851; Rosetta H., born October 10, 1853; John B., born January 10, 1856; Mary J., born January 29, 1858; Joseph A., born February 27, 1860; Henry S., born August 23, 1862; Charles I., born August 28, 1864; Oscar M., born November 30, 1866; Ira W., born October 7, 1869; and Clara U., born November 17, 1871; all of whom are now living. Mrs. Seybold is a member of the Catholic Church. Mr. Seybold takes an active part in the Cass County Agricultural Society, of which he has been director for thirteen years; also served as superintendent for four years.3 |
