On Monday Tom led a raiding party composed of Deputy Sheriff Cowert, Special Deputy James Curtis (Father of Tom), who is appointed during the illness of the sheriff, and several others, captured an 80-gallon still, and destroyed 1,000 gallons of beer and 15 gallons of booze Monday. Guy McRee Curtis, 66, died at his home in Canton Tuesday night at 8 o'clock. He has been in declining health for several years, suffering from arthritis. Mr. Curtis was Fire Chief at Canton for ten years, 1935-45, before his health forced him to retire. He was a native of Fairmount but had spent most of his wife in Canton. He was born August 27, 1891 the son of Jim and Victoria McHan Curtis. He was a veteran of World War I, a member of Canton Masonic Lodge and the First Methodist Church. Funeral Services will be conducted from the Methodist Church this afternoon at 2 o'clock by Rev. N. O. L. Powell and Rev. Bob Kerr, interment will be in Riverview Cemetery with Baker Funeral Home in Charge. Survivors are his mother (step-mother) Mrs. Mary Curtis, his wife, the former Miss Mary Lois Cannon whom he married in 1920, one son, Brady Curtis of Jasper, a brother, Sid Curtis of Etowah, Tennessee, a sister Mrs. G.B. Williams of Smyrna and two grandchildren.2 |

A native of Blue Ridge, Ga., and former resident of Etowah, he had lived in Murfreesboro for the past 15 years. He was a son of the late James Sidney and Ethel Dooley Curtis and was retired from Bowater Corp. A veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Korean War, he was a member of the Meridian-Sun Lodge in Athens. Survivors include two sons, Jim Curtis of Hermitage and Tim Curtis of Alcoa; one daughter, Tanya Curtis Brinegar of Clemons, N.C., one stepson, Michael Walker of Pikesville; one brother, Stanley Curtis of Sierra Vista, Ariz; two sisters, Lucille Webb of Louisville, Ky., and Wanda C. Adams of College Park, Ga; six grandchildren; and one great grandchild. Burial in the Etowah City Cemetery.6 |

Stan is survived by his wife of 47 years, Wilma Louise (Huskey) Curtis; sister, Wanda Adams of Atlanta, Ga; daughters, Barbara (Chuck) Masten of Phoenix, Stanna (Kurt) Obermeier of Sierra Vista, Deborah (Gene) McGuire of Wheatland, Wyo; son, Jerry (Alberta) of Etowah, Tenn; stepchildren, Paul (Charlene) Cook of Bozeman, Mont., and Kathleen (Brian Carroll) Cook of Sierra Vista; grandchildren, David, Traci, Caleb, Kelsey, Kiley, Sean, Melissa, Kandace, Alyx, Amanda, Misty; and seven great-grandchildren. Stan was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jim, Glenn, Sid and Macky; sisters, Sue Davis and Lucille Webb; stepdaughter, Donna Clouser and her son, Christopher; and numerous nieces and nephews. Stan served in the Tennessee National Guard, the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy. In 1961 he was retired from the Navy on disability. From 1965 until 1975, he was a federal civil service employee at Pueblo Army Depot, Colo., transferring to Fort Huachuca, Ariz., where he retired in 1985. Stan was a lifetime member of VFW Post 51, in Pueblo, Colo. He was a 32nd Degree Mason. Several years ago he demitted from AF&AM Silver State Lodge #95 of Pueblo of AF&AM Etowah Lodge #653 of Etowah. His Consistory membership was with the Chattanooga Scottish Rite Bodies of Chattanooga, Tenn. Stan was a member of First Baptist Church, Sierra Vista. Masonic and military services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, 2007, at the Southern Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery, followed by a memorial service and reception at First Baptist Church, 1447 S. Seventh St., beginning at 11 a.m. Dr. James Dixon, former pastor of First Baptist Church will conduct both services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations on Stan's behalf go to either Casa de la Paz Hospice or to the First Baptist Church building fund. There will be a private interment of cremains at the veterans cemetery at a later date.3 |
