Died on the 7th of September 1877, at Columbia, Randolph Co., N.C., of paralysis, John Burgess, in the 90th year of his age. He leaves to mourn his death a wife, four sons, and six daughters, besides a host of relatives and friends. He was a soldier of the War of 1812, self-denying, tender-hearted, generous and a true husband and father, ever ready to do all in his power for anyone in distress, strictly adhering to what he conceived to be just and free from all pretentions. He was a consistent member of the Methodist Protestant Church for many years, although for some time he was unable to attend Church, he continued to live a meek and blameless life. He is gone, but the memory of his still lives and will long be embalmed in the hearts of the community in which he lived.8
