Burgess died near Franklinville, N.C., on Saturday, the 6th day of September, 1890, after an illness of about two months. He was not confined to his room until the last two weeks. During his illness he often said he would not recover and he was ready to go, as he would go home to Jesus. He was born the 26th day of September 1817, making his age nearly 73 years. He was a member of the church over 40 years, and a Mason about 27 years. He was buried with Masonic honors by the Franklinville and Alberta Lodges, at Salem M.P. Church, where he was a member. A large concourse of people were present to pay their respects to the dead. The funeral was preached by Rev. J.T. Crocker of Asheboro. The father of William H. Burgess, was in the war of 1812, under General Andrew Jackson, and was at the battle of New Orleans. In the late war he and his brothers took an active part, and was honorably discharged at the close of the war. Since then he has been engaged with his woollen machinery and his farm. His life was a busy one, always engaged at some kind of work. By close management he gained good property, commencing without a dollar or any real estate. He was married in 1847 to Mary A. Allred, daughter of Robert Allred, Esq., by whom he had three sons and one daughter born unto him, all of which he lived to see well settled and doing well. His family are [sic] satisfied that he has gone to rest and hope to meet him in glory. [Note: Another William H. Burgess, age 58, lived in Liberty Twp. at the same time. His wife was Cynthia Ann L. Bowman, married 6 December 1859.]1 |
