Obit | Helen Maxine's obituary was published in the Daily Post-Athenian on 11 December 2013: Helen Curtis Tullock of Delano went to be home with the Lord on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, John Harrison Tullock. She celebrated her 92nd birthday on Nov. 27, 2013. She was the daughter of the late Emory Laurens Curtis and the late Elmeda Green Curtis. She was a graduate of Etowah High School and Carson Newman College. She taught at Etowah High School, Jefferson City High School, Spring Town Elementary School on Starr Mountain, and Dan Mills Elementary and Dalewood Elementary, both of which are in Nashville. She retired after 32 years of teaching. She and John went on two one-year sabbaticals where they served in Ogbomosho, Nigeria. She served as teacher for missionaries' children, taught English to the wives of students and taught creative writing at the Ogbomosho Baptist Seminary. In her retirement years, Mrs. Tullock enjoyed writing stories about her experiences. She has been published in "Home Life," "Reminisce" and "Country." She published seven books through Parson's Porch and Company. Through her genealogical research, in 1994, she was awarded a certificate naming her as a descendent of one of Tennessee's first families by the East Tennessee Historical Society. During their 64 years of marriage, she and John opened their hearts to include so many, and are cherished by those who called them Mom and Dad. Those include, Frani McLean of Dallas, Texas, Jesse and Glaucia Cerqueira of Rio de Janerio, Brazil, Pat and Linda Fife of Lawrenceburg, Ibiba and Beliefba Okpara of Nashville and Ogbomosho, Nigeria, Sture and Eva Anhland of Uppsula, Sweden; and Mrs. Tullock's caregiver, Debra Meyer. Mrs. Tullock is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Gene Sizemore; her son and daughter-in-law, Laurens and Polly Ailor Tullock; and daughters, Thelma Mankin and Sandra Taylor. Her grandchildren include Donald Martin, Chyna Brackeen, Jodi Martin, Jennifer Meadows and Will Tullock. Her great-grandchildren include Hayden Alexander Brackeen; Emily, Katherine and Elijah Meadows and Erin and Conner Martin. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at Delano Cemetery. A celebration memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14, at Wetmore Baptist Church in Delano. Pallbearers will be Gene Sizemore, Will Tullock, Jesse Cerqueira, David Tullock, Ibiba Okpara, Darrien Thomson, Victor Cerqueira, and John Okpara. Honorary pallbearers will be Donald Ray Martin and Hayden Alexander Brackeen. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Helen C. Tullock Endowed Scholarship at Belmont University. This scholarship is given to a Belmont University senior woman who plans to work in ministry.
