Samuel Curtis Jr.1
M, b. circa 1751, d. circa 1814
Father | Samuel Curtis1 b. c 1720, d. bt 1775 - 1779 |
Last Edited | 22 Jan 2016 |
Birth* | Samuel Curtis Jr. was born circa 1751; Samuel first appears in Randolph County records in the tax list for 1779. His absence from the 1768 tax list and his exemption in 1803 are the main determinants of his date of birth. Samuel is the direct ancestor of all the Curtises on Sandy Creek and northeast quadrant of Randolph County and most if not all of the Curtis descendants who still live in Randolph, Guilford and Alamance Counties. Census records indicate he and his unknown wife had 8 daughters and 2 sons. Only the eldest son John can be considered highly likely based on circumstantial evidence. The daughters' names come from marriage and court records, none of which constitute proof of parentage. Rather, the proof consists of evidence that Samuel is the only possible known parent.1,2 |
NoteB | Regulators' Advertisement No. 8 of 1768 includes the name Samuel Curtis of Orange County. The eastern portion of present-day Randolph County, including Sandy Creek, was then part of Orange County. This could be either the elder Samuel Curtis or his son Samuel (Jr.) Because the names of the adjacent signatures on the advertisement correspond to those of Samuel (Jr.'s) neighbors in the 1779 tax list, I am inclined to believe this is Samuel (Jr.), whose name may have been added to the list by his militia captain. Samuel Sr. is thought to have lived on Caraway Creek, rather than Sandy Creek, because his name appears on the Rowan County tax lists of 1758-1768, rather than Orange County.3,4 |
Marriage* | He married Mrs. Samuel Curtis circa 1769 at Rowan, North Carolina.1 |
NoteB* | James, Joseph, Samuel and Thomas Curtis appeared on the list of debtors of Col. John McGee, and Orange County, NC merchant; unclear which Samuel this is; also Elijah & Elisha Isaacks, Coble, Nation, Robins, Staley, Trogdon, Vickrey and Welborn.5 |
Tax List* | Samuel Curtis Jr. appeared on the personal property tax list of 1779 at John Hind's District, Randolph, North Carolina; 25 acres of improved land, 100 acres total.6 |
NoteB | Samuel signed a petition presented to the North Carolina legislature on 26 January 1779, asking that Guilford County be divided into two compat counties.7 |
NoteB* | In the December 1781 session of the Randolph County Court, Thomas Curtis, Samuel Curtis, Benjamin Curtis and John Curtis "charged with having joined the British Arme, to this Court appeared and discharged for want of Testimoney and took the Oath of Allegiance to the State of North Carolina." On 25 December 1781, Governor Alexander Martin's offered full pardons to Tory sympathizers provided they were not guilty of "murder, robbery, and house breaking," and that they surrender and enlist in the Continental battalions for one year. None of these men are known to have enlisted.8 |
Land Entry* | He entered land on 10 December 1783 at Randolph, North Carolina, described as 100 acres on Sandy Creek waters joining Wm. Ward's and Husband's land beginning on Husband's line and running east on said line for complement; Elias Swift and John Curtis carried the chains for the survey. Deed issued 18 August 1787.9 |
Tax List | He appeared on the personal property tax list of 1785 at Jacob Skeen's List, Randolph, North Carolina; transcribed as Samuel "Corlis," 2 white polls, 100 acres.2 |
Land Purch | On 18 August 1787 Samuel Curtis Jr. purchased land at Randolph, North Carolina, paying the State of North Carolina 10 pounds for the 100 acres on Sandy Creek entered 10 December 1783.10 |

Tax List | He appeared on the personal property tax list of 1799 at James Bain's List, Randolph, North Carolina; 1 white poll, 75 acres, next to John Curtis.2 |
Census | He and Mrs. Samuel Curtis appeared on the census of 1800 at Hillsboro District, Randolph, North Carolina, page 308, 1 female under 10, 1 male and 1 female 10-15, 1 female 16-25, 1 female 26-44, 1 male and 1 female over 45; listed next to John.14 |
Tax List | Samuel Curtis Jr. appeared on the personal property tax list of 1803 at Capt. York's District, taken by James Bain, Randolph, North Carolina; 75 acres, no polls, so he was over 50, lived next to John.2 |
Land Sale* | On 26 April 1805 Samuel Curtis Jr. sold land at Sandy Creek, Randolph, North Carolina, to George Black for $70, described as 25 acres on Sandy Creek, adjacent to John Ward and Christian Kimes; proven by John Brower, May 1805. In a separate deed, John Ward sold property on a fork of Sandy Creek known as Ward's Creek, adjacent to Nicholas Brower, Samuel Curtice, George Black, Christian Kime and Reuben Wood. This land was originally granted to Thomas Branson by Earl Granville, conveyed by Branson to Harmon Husbands and from Husbands to William Ward, thence to John Ward.15,16 |
Tax List | He appeared on the personal property tax list of 1809 at Randolph, North Carolina; 125 acres, no polls; Samuel and John were on the same page but not next to each other.17 |
Census | He appeared on the census of 1810 at Sandy Creek Area, Randolph, North Carolina, page 160, 5 males under 10, 2 males and 1 female 10-15, 2 females 16-25, 1 female 26-44, 1 male over 45.18 |
Land Sale | On 29 December 1813 Samuel Curtis Jr. sold land at Randolph, North Carolina, to John Brower for $300, described as 125 acres lying on the waters of Sandy Creek; proven in court February 1814 term by Jacob Brower; Samuel's mark was an "S;" no relinquishment of dower rights, indicating his wife was dead. This sale left 25 acres in his estate.19 |
Death* | He died circa 1814 at Randolph, North Carolina; not present on 1815 tax list; no death or burial record found. Although there are no further records for Samuel, there is an unknown male over 45 in the household of Samuel & Nelly Curtis in 1820; Nelly's father was dead.20,2 |

David Curtis1
M, b. circa 1745, d. between 1816 and 1820
Father | Samuel Curtis b. c 1720, d. bt 1775 - 1779 |
Last Edited | 18 Apr 2018 |
Birth* | David Curtis was born circa 1745; based on 1800 census and 1795 Wilkes county tax list; place of birth unknown; given his age, David should appear on the 1768 Rowan County tax list, or as a poll in a Curtis household, but he does not; further research.1,2,3 |
Marriage* | He married Sarah Isaacks circa 1775 at North Carolina; Unable to pin down the source of this marriage; no known marriage record.4 |
Tax List* | David Curtis appeared on the personal property tax list of 26 August 1778 at Sheriff Valentine Sevier's District, Washington, Tennessee; 206 acres; white polls aged 21-50 taxed; total tax was 2 pounds, 2 shillings, 3 pence (from court minutes.)5,6 |
Land Entry | He entered circa 1779 at Carter, Tennessee, (formerly Washington County Tennessee/North Carolina); 640 acres (warrant no. 2155), later divided into four parcels and sold to his sons.7 |
Land Entry | He entered land on 30 January 1779 at Washington, North Carolina, for William Davis on Cove Creek, joining David Curtices land beginning about a rod below the said Curtices platation, running up the bank for fouir . . . . -- said land entered for __ Joshua Curtice & transferred to said Davis per order of said Curtis, given at office this 29th day of July 1793.8 |
NoteB | Neither David nor Joshua appeared in the 1782 Wilkes tax list. Capt. Moses Guest's district apparently was in later-day Ashe County, where appeared Elijah Isaacks, Sr., Elisha Isaacks, Samuel Isaacks, "Winant" Vanderpool, Wm. Wilburn and six households of Coffees.9 |
Tax List | He appeared on the personal property tax list of 1784 at Wilkes, North Carolina; 1 poll, 100 acres of land; re-check this record, not found recently.10 |
NoteB | David did not appear on the 1785 Wilkes tax list and did not appear again until 1793.11 |
Census* | He appeared on the census of 1790 at Pendleton District, South Carolina, page 83, 1 male over 16, 4 males 1-15, 1 female; also reported on the same page are Elijah Isaacs, Benj. Cleveland Esq., Jesse Coffee and William Ward; the Cleveland/Isaacs move from Wilkes County to South Carolina is well-documented. One could suppose that David fought with Col. Cleveland's militia, but there is no documentation to that effect.12 |
NoteB | In August 1792, David Curtice, along with David and Caleb Isaacs, the Bairds, Wards and others, petitioned he North Carolina General Assembly as follows: "We, the inhabitants of Watauger River and Cove Creek, being the upper corner of Washington County but now cut off by the Western Territory and left destitute of any law or protection; and whereas there have been sundry petitions to be taken into Burke County - - - - - we, the humble petitioners pray that of your great wisdom and goodness you will grant to us the privilege of being annexed to Wilkes County, if we can't have a new county of our own - - - - and we humber petitioners in duty bound will ever pray."13 |
Tax List | He appeared on the personal property tax list of 1793 at Watauger Settlement, Wilkes, North Carolina; 1 poll, 50 acres. This list appears to mark the return of the South Carolina contingent to what is now Watauga County, then a part of Wilkes. The Isaacks family - Elijah Sr. and Jr. , Richard and David also appear. The 1787 Wilkes census listed Rachel Isaacks as a widow; her husband may have been Elisha (check will/probate records) No record of what happened to the land David entered and lived on previously.14 |
NoteB* | On 30 July 1793, David, along with Benj. & Joshua Ward, Ezekial & Samuel Baird and others were ordered by the court to view a road from Rich Mountain to Lewis Stephens' on the Watauga and likewise a bridle path from Cove Creek to the top of Stone Mountain.15 |
Tax List | He appeared on the personal property tax list of 1794 at Capt. Dyer's District, Wilkes, North Carolina; 1 poll, 50 acres. This is the same district called "Watauger" in the 1793 tax list. Other residents were Elijah Jr. and Sr. and David Isaacks, Benj. Joshua and John Ward, 5 households of Bairds, and Joseph White who reported no acreage, but soon sold land to David Curtis.16 |
Tax List | He appeared on the personal property tax list of 1795 at Capt. Dyer's District, Wilkes, North Carolina; no polls, 150 acres. Assuming males over 50 years of age were exempt from taxes, this places David's date of birth considerably earlier than once believed, say about 1744-1745. Census reports for 1800 and 1810 only give his age as "over 45," which appears to account for the most common estimate of "before 1755."2 |
NoteB | On 6 May 1795 the Court ordered David, along with Ezekial Baird, Joseph White, Chesley Coffee and others to view whether lands entered by "Cunningham" were fit for cultivation.17 |
Land Entry* | He entered land on 25 June 1795 at Wilkes, North Carolina, described as 100 acres on both sides of the south fork of Roane Creek adjoining Edmund Jones, entry 1990, grant number 1345 recorded in Book 90, page 5 on 17 October 1796; Elijah Isaacs and J Reuben Davenport, chain carriers; Ashe County in 1799.18 |
NoteB | Sometime in 1796, the Court appointed David the overseer of the road from gap Rich Mountain to Russel's Mill, thence a Bridle Way to the top of Stone Mountain; Capt. Whittenton's and Capt. Ayres' companies were to assist in clearing the road.19 |
Tax List | He appeared on the personal property tax list of 1796 at Capt. Whittenton's District, Wilkes, North Carolina; 1 poll, 630 acres. Since David reported zero polls in 1795, this indicates that one of the boys was living with him when the sheriff made his rounds. The hard question is where were the boys during these years?20 |
NoteB | On 5 May 1796, the Court ordered David, along with Benj. Ward, Cutleff Harmon, John Yount, Ezekial Baird and others to view the wagon road from the school house on Brushey Fork to Rock House on Cove and thence to the top of Stone Mountain.21 |
Tax List | He appeared on the personal property tax list of 1797 at Capt. Jon Whittenton's District, Wilkes, North Carolina; no polls, 630 acres. Since Samuel now appears separately on this tax list, but Elijah and James do not, the implication is that they are still under 21; name is spelled "Curtice" for all three in this district.22 |
Census | He appeared on the census of 1800 at Morgan District, Ashe, North Carolina, page 76, 1 female under 10, 2 males 16-25, 1 male and 1 female over 45; Elijah and Samuel were reported in separate households, which accounts for all four of David's sons. Joshua Curtis, Sr. also appears on the same page, which is alphabetical.23 |
NoteB | On 26 August 1800 Samuel Hicks entered 100 acres in Ashe County described as "on Vanderpool's mill creek, waters of Cove Creek; border: begins on a "condichenal" line made by Joseph "Curtice" & David Curtice and runs up said creek.24 |
Land Sale | On 8 May 1802 David Curtis sold land at Ashe, North Carolina, to Samuel Curtis for $200, described as a 208 acre portion of a 640 acre tract granted to Joseph White and conveyed to David Curtis, adjacent to David Isaacs; witnessed by Will Johnston and Caleb Isaac.25 |
Land Sale | On 8 May 1802 David Curtis sold land at Ashe, North Carolina, to James Curtis for $200, described as a 202 acre portion of a 640 acre tract granted to Joseph White and conveyed to David Curtis, adjacent to Samuel Curtis; witnessed by Will Johnston and Caleb Isaac.26 |
Land Sale | On 8 May 1802 David Curtis sold land at Ashe, North Carolina, to Elijah Curtis for $200, described as a 100 acre tract formerly lying in Wilkes County, but now lying in Carter County, Tennessee, adjacent to Edmund Jones on "Roons" Creek; witnessed by Wm Johnston and Caleb Isaac.27 |
NoteB | On 10 August 1803, William Johnson entered 100 acres in Ashe County described as "on the wagon road newly laid off to Tennessee? road on state line and on south side of Watauger River; border: begins near the state line, includes the good land on both sides of said road and David 'urites' old hunting camp and a peach & apple nussery made by Ward."28 |
NoteB | On 9 May 1808, Nathan Horton entered 100 acres of land in Ashe County on Georges Br., described as "begins at David Curtis' line, runs up said branch & on both sides of the wagon road; includes the vacant land between said Curtis and Robeson Ridge now lives."29 |
NoteB | David was appointed juror for the March 1809 term of the Superior Court.30 |
Census | He appeared on the census of 1810 at Ashe, North Carolina, page 72, 1 female under 10, 1 female 16-25, 1 male and 1 female over 45; lived next to Thomas Curtis, other nearby families were Vanderpool, Stonesipher, Webb and Isaacks.31 |
Land Sale* | On 7 October 1812 David Curtis sold land at Ashe, North Carolina, to Thomas Curtis, for $200, described as 119 acres lying on Cove Creek, adjacent to John Mast's line & Martin Rupel's line, being the lower end of the tract of 640 acres granted to Joseph White and sold to David Curtis, witnessed by John Mast and Eli Harmon. Total sales to David's four sons were 639 acres, all of the 640 acre grant. I have not accounted for the 100 acres granted 25 June 1795.32 |
NoteB | On 14 September 1814, Bedent Baird entered 100 acres in Ashe County on the waters of Cove Creek on Gorges Branch, described as land he bought of Thomas Curtis, running east within 12 feet of said Thomas, formerly "Avid Curtis" line. This might be taken to mean that David was dead. |
Death* | He died between 1816 and 1820 at Ashe, North Carolina; last record found in Ashe County is 5 August 1816 deed.33 |
NoteB | On 5 August 1816, "a" David Curtis entered 50 acres in Ashe County, border described as "begins at Richard Isaac's line, runs up the branch & various course, includes vacant land." David lived next to Richard Isaacks in the 1810 census, so this appears to be him. No record for disposition of this property.34 |

Birth* | William Curtis was born circa 1770 at Rowan, North Carolina; date of birth based on his appearance on the 1791 tax list for the first time, presumably at age 21, which is consistent with census reports; place of birth is based on Joshua's presence in Rowan County in 1768 in the portion that became Guilford in 1771 and Randolph in 1779.1,2,3 |
Marriage* | He married Edith (Edy) Cottrell, daughter of Thomas Cottrell III and Jane (Jennie) Brown, circa 1789 at Wilkes, North Carolina; No marriage record; William was married when the 1790 census was taken, but there were no children present in the household.4,2,5 |
Census | William Curtis appeared on the census of 1790 at Wilkes, North Carolina, page 120, 1 male and 1 female.5 |
Tax List* | He appeared on the personal property tax list of 1791 at Capt. Farguson's District, Wilkes, North Carolina; 1 poll, no acreage. This is William's first appearance on the tax roll; although he appeared in the 1790 census as a householder, he did not appear on the 1790 tax list, suggesting he had not reached age 21. Based on this logic, his date of birth is set at 1770, 21 years prior.3 |
Tax List | He appeared on the personal property tax list of 1792 at Capt. Farguson's District, Wilkes, North Carolina; 1 poll, no acreage.6 |
Tax List | He appeared on the personal property tax list of 1793 at Capt. Farguson's District, Wilkes, North Carolina; 1 poll, no acreage.7 |
Tax List | He appeared on the personal property tax list of 1796 at Capt. Hulm's District, Wilkes, North Carolina; 1 poll, no acreage.8 |
NoteB | In August 1796, the Court ordered William & Samuel, along with Thomas Cottrell, Wm. Landsdown, four of the Coffeys and others, to view the bridle path from General Lenoir's property up Buffalo Creek through the cove above Thomas Cottrells to the first spur of the mountain.9 |
NoteB | On 1 November 1796 the Court ordered Samuel and William, along with Thomas Cottrell and others to view the Bridle Way from Jacob Haglers ford on Elk to William Landsdown's Mill on Buffalo.10 |
Tax List | He appeared on the personal property tax list of 1797 at Capt. Hulme's District, Wilkes, North Carolina; 1 poll, no acreage.8 |
Tax List | He appeared on the personal property tax list of 1799 at Capt. Hulme's District, Wilkes, North Carolina; 1 poll, no acreage.11 |
Census | He and Edith (Edy) Cottrell appeared on the census of 1800 at Wilkes, North Carolina, Once thought to be living with Joshua in Ashe County, the household composition makes it more likely they simply were omitted from the 1800 census.12 |
NoteB | The Raleigh Register of 24 August 1809 reported pending tax sales for the year 1807, including 37 acres on Buffaloe Creek, by Wm. Crutis.13 |
Moved | William Curtis moved to Humphreys, Tennessee, in September 1809; In September 1809, William's brother Joshua requested a letter of dismissal from the Yadkin Baptist Church because he was moving, and neither he nor William are present in the 1810 NC census; Thomas Cottrell Curtis was born in Tennessee in March 1811, and both William and Joshua Curtis appear on the 1812 tax list of Humphreys County, Tennessee. |
Tax List | He appeared on the personal property tax list of 1812 at Capt. Simpson's Company, Humphreys, Tennessee; tax list information is insufficient to prove who William Curtis was.14 |

Curtis. The low price indicates that Thomas would take care of them for their remaining lives. The recording of the deed on 20 March 1845 may indicate that William had passed away.22 |
Death* | He died circa March 1845 at Black Twp., Posey, Indiana; no death, probate or court record has been found to date; the last record with his name is the 30 January 1845 sale of property to Thomas, which was recorded two months later on 20 March 1845, which may indicate his death had occurred.23,24 |
(Witness) Bio | From Leonard History: The family is of English descent, and was founded in the Virginia colony previous to the War of the Revolution, in which members of the family served with the Colonial troops. The first of the family to settle in Indiana was William Curtis, a native of Virginia, who came to Posey county previous to 1814, and located on land in what is now Black township. He was accompanied by a son. Thomas Cottrell Curtis, who also located in Black township, and reached the advanced age of ninety-two years, and who resided on the same farm until his death. Both were farmers, acquired valuable properties, and were men of influence in the formative period of the county. Black Township. . . Among the earliest settlers of this township were Wm. Curtis, father of Thomas, Joshua and Wm. B. (who is the father of George W., the incumbent of the County Clerk's office), and his cousin, Kel Curtis.25,26 |

Obit | Thomas Cottrell's obituary was published in the Western Star on 30 April 1903: THOMAS C. CURTIS "An Honest Man Falls Asleep in Old Age" Thomas Cottrell Curtis, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Posey county, died at his home three miles northwest of Mount Vernon, Saturday morning, April 25. Funeral, Sunday the 26th, at Black's cemetery, Rev. Shake of the M.E. Church conducting the services at Black's M.E. Church. Many devoted relatives and friends were in attendance to pay their last sad tribute of respect. Thomas Cottrell Curtis was born March 3rd, 1811, in the State of Tennessee, and was 92 years, 1 month and 22 days old at his death. He was a son of William Curtis and Edith Cottrell Curtis. William Curtis, his father, a son of Joshua Curtis and Sallie Clark Curtis and Edith Cottrell Curtis, his mother, a daughter of Thomas Cottrell and Jennie Brown Cottrell, were descended from English parentage, who settled in Virginia sometime during the seventeenth century. The ancestors of deceased moved to North Carolina, and from there to Tennessee, about the year 1800; his father and mother came to Indiana in 1815, and settled on the land where deceased lived for 88 years. On November 2nd, 1848, he was married to Emily E. McDaniel, who preceded him in death 15 years. Five children were born to them: William Miles Curtis, deceased, Thomas W. Curtis and Mrs. James Brazel of this county, George Curtis, of Arizona, and Mrs. Anderson Nelson, of Illinois. Deceased was a democrat in politics and cast his first vote for Andrew Jackson for President in 1832. He was honest in all his conviction, and retained his mental faculties and talked intelligently, until he fell asleep in old age. Deceased was a brother of the father of Geo. W. Curtis, ex-county clerk, who was born on the farm of Uncle Tommy, in 1815-the year they moved there from Tennessee, who died in 1891.2,12 |

Birth* | Joshua Curtis Jr. was born in 1771 at Guilford, North Carolina; Guilford was formed from Rowan in April 1771 and included present-day Randolph County.1,2,3 |
(Witness) Census | He appeared on the census of 1790 Wilkes, North Carolina, in the household of Joshua Curtis Sr.; page 120, 2 males over 16, 8 females; Joshua was the second male over 16, as William and Samuel were enumerated in their own households; one additional female in the household compared to the 1787 census; her name is unknown.4 |
Tax List* | Joshua Curtis Jr. appeared on the personal property tax list of 1792 at Capt. Farguson's District, Wilkes, North Carolina; 1 poll, 80 acres. This is Joshua Jr.'s first appearance on the tax list, and he had acquired land in the past year without diminishing the 150 acres owned by Joshua Sr. Assuming the Curtises religiously reported their ages correctly to the tax assessor, and that 21 was the relevant year for tax payments, then Joshua's year of birth should be about 1771, which is consistent with the 1800 census in which his age was reported as 26-44, and with the 1790 census in which he was the male over 16 living with Samuel.3 |
NoteB* | Joshua and his 80 acres from the 1792 report do not appear on the 1793 tax list.5 |
Tax List | He appeared on the personal property tax list of 1794 at Capt. Dyer's District, Wilkes, North Carolina; 1 poll, no acreage. Since David Curtis had no son named Joshua, it appears that this is Joshua's son Joshua, Jr. reappearing after being absent in the 1793 tax list.6 |
Marriage* | He married Nancy Cottrell, daughter of Thomas Cottrell III and Jane (Jennie) Brown, on 7 July 1794 at Wilkes, North Carolina; witnessed by Samuel Baker, Lewis Stevens, Susanna Baird, Ezekiel Baird; bride's name is illegible in original record, name is proven through Thomas Cottrell will that names Joshua Curtis and Nancy his wife.1,7,2 |
Tax List | Joshua Curtis Jr. appeared on the personal property tax list of 1795 at Capt. Dyer's District, Wilkes, North Carolina; listed as delinquent, along with Joseph White and the four Ward households.8 |
Tax List | He appeared on the personal property tax list of 1796 at Capt. Whittenton's District, Wilkes, North Carolina; 1 poll, no acreage; Dyer's district in 1795.9 |
Tax List | He appeared on the personal property tax list of 1797 at Capt. Hulme's District, Wilkes, North Carolina; 1 poll, no acreage. Joshua apparently moved back to the old Buffalo Cove homestead and left Joshua Sr. out in what became Ashe County with David Curtis.10 |
Tax List | He appeared on the personal property tax list of 1799 at Capt. Hulme's District, Wilkes, North Carolina; 1 poll, 50 acres.11 |
NoteB | In December 1799, the Yadkin Baptist Church received Joshua Curtis by experience. This is more likely Joshua Jr. than Joshua Sr.12,13 |
Census* | He appeared on the census of 1800 at Wilkes, North Carolina, page 34, 4 females under 10, 1 male and 1 female 26-44.1 |
Land Entry* | He entered land on 7 May 1800 at Wilkes, North Carolina, described as 83 acres on the N side of Buffalow Creek of the Yadkin River adjoining William Lenoir, Thomas Cottrell and Samuel Curtis chain carriers, entry 986, grant 2104 dated 13 December 1800.14 |
Land Purch* | In 1801 Joshua Curtis Jr. purchased land at Wilkes, North Carolina, from William Lenoir, described as 40 acres, on Buffalow of the Yadkin River adjacent to his own property, (day/month not filled in) ; deed record May 1806. |
Land Purch | On 8 May 1805 Joshua Curtis Jr. purchased land at Wilkes, North Carolina, for 75 pounds from Joshua Curtis Sr. of Ashe County, described as 83 acres lying on both sides of Buffalo Creek of the Yadkin River, the same parcel obtained by Joshua Sr. in grant number 2101, entered 7 May 1800.15 |
Land Sale* | On 4 September 1808 Joshua Curtis Jr. sold land at Wilkes, North Carolina, for $200 paid by William Cottrell, described as 206 acres lying on both sides of Buffalo Creek, where said Joshua used to live and adjacent to Samuel and William Curtis' lines; this accounted for all of Joshua land holdings obtained in three previous transactions.16 |
NoteB | In the July term of the Wilkes County Court of Please and Quarter Sessions, "Joshua Curtis, 1 poll" was placed on the list of insolvants for not paying 1808 taxes, along with nearly 70 other residents; this probably was Joshua Jr.17 |
NoteB | The minutes of the Yadkin Baptist Church state that in September 1809 "Jos Curtis" requested a letter of dismissal because he was moving.13 |
NoteB | The Raleigh Register of 5 July 1810 contained notice of Sheriff's Sales in the town of Wikesborough on 24 August, including 206 acres on Buffalo creek, given in by Joshua Curtis. (Further research.) |
Tax List | He appeared on the personal property tax list of 1812 at Capt. Simpson's Company, Humphreys, Tennessee; no record adequately links this Joshua Curtis with either the earlier Wilkes County records or the later Humphreys County records-further research.18 |
Census | He appeared on the census of 1820 at Humphreys, Tennessee, page 201, 1 male and 1 female under 10, 3 females 10-15, 1 female 16-25, 1 female 26-44, 1 male over 45; their son Thomas is not present.19 |
Land Entry | He entered land on 4 April 1825 at Humphreys, Tennessee, described as 20 acres lying in the 12th district, range 7, section 2, original certificates issued to Ashburn and Patrick, numbers 6728 and 6727; this land became Benton County.20 |
Census | He appeared on the census of 1830 at Humphreys, Tennessee, page 325, 1 male under 5, 3 females 10-14, 1 female 15-20, 1 female 40-49, 1 male 50-59; Thomas lived next door.21 |
Tax List | He appeared on the personal property tax list of 1836 at Benton, Tennessee; no acreage given.22 |
Tax List | He appeared on the personal property tax list of between 1837 and 1842 at Benton, Tennessee; 20 acres valued at $200 reported in each year.22 |
Census | He appeared on the census of 1840 at Benton, Tennessee, page 5, 1 female 15-19, 1 female 20-29, 1 female 50-59, 1 male 60-69.23 |
Will* | He left a will on 20 June 1842 at Benton, Tennessee; only persons named were his son Thomas and grandson Joshua.24 |
