Birth*Joshua Curtis was born in 1795 at Wilkes, North Carolina.1,2,3
(Witness) Land SaleHe witnessed the sale of land by Eli Curtis on 10 February 1817 at Mount Vernon, Posey, Indiana; to Joshua Curtice, the three town lots against which he owed $90 to Samuel Kimble and guaranteed by Joshua Curtice; in addition to the lots, Eli also pledged most of his worldly possessions in the event he was unable to pay off the note to Kimble. The Joshua in question appears more likely to be William's son than Joshua Kel, who was not involved in the various Curtis transactions as far as I can tell.4
Marriage*Joshua Curtis married Sarah (Sally) Alldridge circa 1818 at Posey, Indiana; no marriage record found.5,2
Census*Joshua Curtis and Sarah (Sally) Alldridge appeared on the census of 1820 at Posey, Indiana, page 306A, 1 male under 10, 1 male 18-25, 1 female 16-25.5
CensusJoshua Curtis and Sarah (Sally) Alldridge appeared on the census of 1830 at Black Twp., Posey, Indiana, page 177, 3 males under 5, 2 males 10-14, 1 male and 1 female 30-39; listed as "Joshua Jr." to distinguish him from his distant cousin Joshua (Kel) Curtis Sr.6
Land Purch On 4 October 1834 Joshua Curtis purchased land at Posey, Indiana, for $150, from Samuel Aldridge Jr. and his wife Amy, 80 acres, described as the east half of the south west quarter section number 14 in township number seven, south of range number fourteen.7
CensusHe and Sarah (Sally) Alldridge appeared on the census of 1840 at Black Twp., Posey, Indiana, page 276, 1 male and 1 female under 5, 1 female 5-9, 4 males 10-14, 1 male and 1 female 15-19, 1 male and 1 female 40-49.8
Death*Joshua Curtis died in 1844 at Black Twp., Posey, Indiana.1,2,3
NoteB* In February 1845, Sarah Curtis, administrator of the estate of Joshua Curtis, dec'd, appeared in court to present a petition to sell real estate. Later in the year, she sold 60 of the 80 acres to William Jeffries. The entire property was described as "the north west quarter of the south east quarter of section number fourteen township number seven, south of range fourteen west, in all 80 acres." Joshua's estate was later declared insolvent and it was not until June 1852 that Merrit Curtis paid his mother (now Sarah Duckworth) $40 for the remaining 20 acres.9,10

This church was constituted in the year 1845 with thirteen members, only two of whom are now living. The constituting presbytery was composed of Elders Smith Ferguson, William Brown and Joseph Harrison. The church is located on the upper valley of the Yadkin, in the section known as “Richlands” Caldwell Co., N.C. It joined the Lewis Fork Association in 1847, which was its first connection with any Association. In 1867 they took a letter and joined the Three Fork Association, and in 1885 went into the organization of the Caldwell County association. J. I. McGhinnis is the pastor at this time. The church now numbers 57 members, has a Sunday school and the signs of usefulness are hopeful.

Among the pastors that have served the church may be mentioned Joseph Harrison, R.H. Moody, H. Holsclaw, Isaac Smith, J.W. Hall and Thos. F. Nelson. One minister of the gospel, S. Curtis, has come from the membership. The present deacons are John Curtis, William Curtis and Thos. Curtis, and Joshua Curtis is Clerk, Post Office Patterson, N.C. Of the members in the constitution of the church John Curtis, Sr., and his wife are the only survivors. They are now old and feeble, the old gentleman 85 years old, the old lady 88. They have lived together 63 years, raised seven children, 5 sons and two daughters. The oldest child is 62 years old, the youngest 47. The old people have 54 grandchildren and 85 great grandchildren.
