Joshua Curtis1
M, b. 1813
Birth* | Joshua Curtis was born in 1813 at Wilkes, North Carolina; Wilkes County place is from 1850 census. Finley Patterson's letter to Harlow Curtis in 1939 states that Joshua was the son of Mary Curtis, father's name not given. Allen Poe thouigh his mother was Rosannah, which is also possible.3,4 |
(Witness) Census | He appeared on the census of 1820 Wilkes, North Carolina, in the household of Mary (Polly) Curtis; page 527, 1 male under 10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 16-25, 1 female 26-44; appears as "Mary."2 |
Marriage* | Joshua Curtis married Margaret Edmiston circa 1833 at Burke, North Carolina; no marriage record found.1 |
Note* | Finley Patterson Curtis, in a letter to Harlow D. Curtis, listed a daughter named Emeline, who married James Blair and had daughters Harriet and Julia. An Ancestry family tree by Gayle Phillips lists a daughter Martha Emeline, wife of James Blair, with those daughters also. Neither includes Martha Ann who married James Harrison and is buried in the Curtis Family Cemetery, which most researchers believe was Joshua and Margaret's daughter. The death certificate of Harriet E. Phillips (1933, Sp;otsylvania, VA) reveals her maidenname as Blair, daughter of James Blair and Emeline Coffee, not Emeline Curtis. Martha Ann Harrison is buried at the Curtis Family Cemetery, which argues that she was a Curtis; however, that still leaves the unanswered question of why Finley Patterson Curtis didn't follow this logic.4,5 |
Note | Finley Patterson Curtis named two sons, John and Carrol, stating that both died in the Civil War, never married. I filnd no record for a Carrol Curtis, but there are records for John C. Curtis, who died in the Civil War. Perhaps he was John Carroll Curtis, who Finely divied into two.4 |

F, b. 1816
Birth* | Margaret Edmiston was born in 1816 at Burke, North Carolina; Burke County place of birth is from 1850 census; no marriage record found.1 |
Married Name | As of circa 1833,her married name was Curtis.1 |
Marriage* | She married Joshua Curtis, son of Mary (Polly) Curtis, circa 1833 at Burke, North Carolina; no marriage record found.1 |
Note* | Finley Patterson Curtis, in a letter to Harlow D. Martha Ann Harrison is buried at the Curtis Family Cemetery, which argues that she was a Curtis; however, that still leaves the unanswered question of why Finley Patterson Curtis didn't follow this logic.3,2 |
