Death* | Julius David Miller died on 3 April 1892 at Wilkes, North Carolina, at age 33.3 |
(Witness) Bio | "Julius David Miller, a deputy marshall, was shot and killed on Sunday Apirl 3rd, 1892, at one o'clock P. M. at Little Rock Church inWilkes County, NC, about seventeen miles from Lenoir on the RidgeRoad, by an unknown horse thief whom he was pursuing and attempting toarrest. The horse thief had been tracked from Unicoi, Tennessee through Mitchell, McDowell, Burke and into Caldwell County. The mare was easily tracked because it was shod with one "Mule" shoe which made a track different from the others. Julius D. Miller and John Small pursued the thief down the Yadkin River to where the thief crossed the river at Col. Folk's. The thief became lost in his attempt to get to the Lenoir-Wilkesboro Ridge Road, and Miller and Small were able to gain on him. They sighted the fugitive about one mile west of the Little Rock Church. A hot race past the Church, where a large crowd was assembled for preaching, ensued. The thief left his horse and Miller pursued on foot. Five or six shots rang out. Miller called out, and when Small found Miller, Miller had been shot. Miller lived only five minutes more. Even though a posse rom Caldwell and Wilkes Counties searched for days the thief was never found. Julius's children were taken to the Masonic Orphanage at Oxford, NC. Robert ran away and returned to Caldwell as soon as he could, and some other family members went and brought George and William home soon after. Robert married Parolee Hamlet, lived in Buffalo Cove and was a teacher there for many years; George married Myra Curtis and established a home at Frog Level; William married Lucretia Gree and lived near Nelson's Chapel for many years."
"The above is a transcript from the "Caldwell County Herritage". It was presented by Eric B. Miller, with corrections by Violet Miller Hawkins. The following sources were used: Lenoir Topic files, gravemarkers at Belview Cemetery and Nelson's Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery; census records of Caldwell County, Caldwell County Deeds Office Records; Leone Pitts Miller." The above is a narrative taken from "Nelsons of Western N. C., a Photo History" compiled by Marvin L. Nelson, of 4622-3 Grandview Rd, SW, Roanoke, VA 24018. Dated 1 June 1987.3 |
