Haywood Curtis, of Hudson, and Fred Smith, of Graniteville, were drowned in the Dan River near Walnut Cove early yesterday morning when a scaffold on which they were working gave way and threw them into the swollen stream.
The Dan River had been swollen by the recent rains, had overflowed its banks, and was still rising.

Mrs. Parlet, who was born in Whitebird, Idaho, died Thursday . She was a 30-year resident of Spokane and former resident of Coulee Dam. She graduated from Lewiston State Normal School in 1934 and from Eastern Washington State College in 1960. Mrs. Parlet was an elementary school teacher in Gifford and Winchester, Idaho, and in Pasco. She married Gilbert Parlet in Lewiston in 1941. He died in 1978. Mrs. Parlet had resided at the Waterford on the South Hill for the past eight years.3

She was born in Avery County to the late Rev. J.W. Pritchard and Emma Maltba Pritchard. Mrs. Curtis was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Paul W. Curtis; four sisters, Edith Vaughan, Verna Teague, Ailene Fox and Pauline McDade; and one son-in-law, Wayne E. Price. Mrs. Elizabeth Curtis is survived by five daughters, Barbara Knox and husband, Bud, Becky Curtis, Burlene Price, Martha Wright and husband, Larry, and Kay Crooks and husband, Gerald; two sisters, Mrs. Donald Coffey and Ms. Ruth Nicholson, both of Hickory; two brothers, Raymond J. Pritchard and wife, Jean, of Winston-Salem and Herbert H. Pritchard and wife, Mary, of Boone; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews, along with many friends.

Elizabeth worked in a variety of professions, including retail sales, textiles, food service and served as a volunteer for Frye Regional Medical Center for 11 years. Her best and most fulfilling profession was being a loving and outstanding mother to her five daughters and sons-in-law, whom she loved more than life. Elizabeth was a woman of great faith. She was a charter member of Longview Church of God and adult Sunday School teacher for more than 50 years. She and her husband served as missionaries in Nassau, Bahamas, in the late 1940s. She lived an exemplary life among all who knew and loved her. The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, at Longview Church of God, with the Rev. Dr. C.L. Simmons officiating. Mrs. Curtis will be placed in the church from 2:30 to 3 p.m., prior to the service. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery.7

He was born Dec. 12, 1913, in Caldwell County, to the late James Harrison Curtis and the late Minnie Coffey Curtis. He was retired from Thomasville Furniture Co. and was a member of West Lenoir Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Cora Lee Crisp Curtis.
Survivors include two sons, Ernest Russell Curtis and Horace Curtis, both of Lenoir, three daughters, Mrs. Fred (Betty) Piercy, Mrs. Dan (Shirley) Swanson and Mrs. Ray (Helen) Curtis, all of Lenoir; one foster son, Larry Ace Crisp of Asheville; three brothers, Roy Curtis of New Jersey, and James Ark Curtis and Floyd Earl Curtis, both of Lenoir; one sister, Mrs. Carl (Bertha) Gilbert of Lenoir; 15 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at West Lenoir Baptist Church with the Rev. Keith Shorter and the Rev. James Locke officiating. Burial will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.5
