Harry Lee Curtis, 92, of Taylorsville Road, Lenoir, passed away, Friday, March 8, 2013, at his residence. He was born May 5, 1920, in Lenoir, the son of Samuel Luther Curtis and Mary Isabel "Dolly" Richards Curtis. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, Ravenel, sisters, Virginia Curtis Suddreth and Mary Curtis Brown, and brother, Banks M. Curtis. Survivors inc lude his wife, Bobbie Jaynes Triplett Curtis; a daughter, Dixie Curtis Westmoreland; and a son, Roswell Richard Curtis; step-daughter, Candace Triplett; step-grandsons, Pierce and Andrew Casturao; a sister, Patricia Curtis Presnell; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Following graduation from Lenoir High School, he attended Berea College at Berea, Ky. With World War II erupting he proudly served in the U.S. Marines and went on to serve during the Korean Conflict. He received an undergraduate degree in geology at Emory University. He furthered his education at Vanderbilt University, the War College and received a Master's degree in International Af fairs from American University in Washington, D.C. A member of Uni ted Presbyterian Church, Curtis also maintained membership with the American Legion. He led an illustrious career span of thirty two years working at the Pentagon, teaching intelligence to commissioned and noncommissioned officers. His career in the National Photographic Interpretation Center (NPIC) was cited for high ideals, professionalism and concern for all people. His interest and fondness for gardening produced blue ribbon rewards for prized roses, luscious vegetables and fruits which he grew with pride. Other hobbies included reading, especially history, music, theatrical productions, travelling and hiking.
Military rites will be conducted Thursday, March 14, at 10 a.m. at Blue Ridge Memorial Park followed by graveside interment. A memorial service will be conducted at United Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Steve Austin and Chaplain Steve Butler officiating. Receiving of friends and relatives will follow the service. In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests memorial contributions be made to United Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 1495, 415 Pennell St., Lenoir, NC 28645, or Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood St, Lenoir, NC 28645. Banks M. Curtis, 87, of East Street, SW, Lenoir died Friday, February 10, 2012 at the VA Medical Center in Salisbury. He was born March 24, 1924 in Caldwell County to the late Samuel and Mary Richards Curtis. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Suddreth and Mary Brown. Mr. Curtis was retired from the U.S. Government. He was a CIA agent, a chief map layer for U.S. Dept. of Oceanography and technical writer for the last two years of his federal government employment. He was also a United States Navy World War II veteran. Survivors include niece and caregiver, Mrs. Jaffa Hyman and husband John of Lenoir; one brother, Harry L. Curtis of Lenoir; one sister, Patricia Presnell of Vilas; and nine nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 2 p.m., at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Pastor Tim Hawkins and Rev. Robert Brown. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.5
