Birth* | Joshua Kel Curtis was born circa 1785 at Randolph, North Carolina; said to be a "cousin" of William Curtis (b. 1770 of Wilkes County). Given his approximate date of birth, he should have been born in Randolph County, NC. DNA test results prove beyond any doubt he was part of the Randolph County Curtis family. He is named a son of Samuel Curtis (Jr.) because he "fits" and because of the Aldridge connection, evidenced by the 1817 deed. Samuel and Amy Aldridge were from the Sandy Creek area of Randolph County, where Samuel Curtis lived.1,3 |
Marriage* | He married First Wife Unknown between 1800 and 1810; based on ages of children in 1820 census; she may have been a daughter of Samuel and Amy Aldridge, who sold them 46 acres in 1817 for one dollar.4 |
Milit-Beg* | Joshua Kel Curtis began military service on 15 August 1812 at Posey, Indiana, as a private in Captain Wiggins Company for a three-month tour during the fall of 1812; the company organized at Vincennes.5 |

Census* | He appeared on the census of 1820 at Posey, Indiana, page 308, 1 male under 10, 1 male and 1 female 10-15, 1 male 18-25, 1 female 16-25, 1 male 26-44; apparently widowed.4 |
Marriage* | He married Eleanor (Ellen or Nellie) Dent on 25 December 1820 at Posey, Indiana; by the Rev. Samuel Jones, a Baptist minister, under the name Eleanor Gibbons; license only, no return.7,5 |
Census | Joshua Kel Curtis appeared on the census of 1830 at Black Twp., Posey, Indiana, 1 male and 2 females under 5, 1 female 5-10, 1 male and 1 female 10-14, 1 male 40-49 and 1 female 30-39; listed as Joshua Curtis, Sr.8 |
Land Sale* | On 19 July 1834 Joshua Kel Curtis sold land at Black Twp., Posey, Indiana, along with his wife Eleanor, to John Woody for $100, the same 46 acre tract given them by William and Amy Aldridge in 1817.9 |
Census | He appeared on the census of 1840 at Robinson Twp., Posey, Indiana, page 328, 1 male under 5, 1 female 5-9, 1 female 10-14, 1 male and 2 females 15-19, 1 male and 1 female 40-49; Joshua should be listed as 50-59, based on prior census reports.10 |
Death* | He died on 3 December 1842 at Robinson, Indiana; Joshua was enumerated in Robinson Twp. in 1840, although he previously lived in Black Twp. as did Eleanor in the 1850 census; the last digit of the year was overwritten and might be 1843.1,5 |
(Witness) Bio | On the 29th of October, 1817, a young physician of much promise, by the name of Thomas Moore Parke, accompanied by his wife, located in the embryo village of Mt. Vernon, and immediately began the practice of his profession. Soon after his advent into that frontier village, a man by the name of Peter Hendricks, while riding a fractious horse, was thrown against a stump of a tree, near the corner of Walnut and Second streets, and killed. The young physician, for purposes of dissection, it is supposed, obtained possession of the body by some means and conveyed it to his stable loft, in the rear of the hotel now known as the European, and covered it with hay. Some one passing through the alley in the rear of the building referred to, accidentally discovered the feet of the corpse, and the presence of it in the stable of Dr. Parke caused a suspicion of body-snatching to be directed against him, which ended in outspoken indignation. It is said that Mrs. Rachel Givens, a woman of high connection, allowed her anger to lead her to take steps that would result in the physician's punishment. She employed a profligate and drunken fellow by the name of George Gibbons to avenge the wrong, and promised to reward him with a jug of whisky if he would personally chastise the doctor. Five months after his arrival, March 29, 1818, the young physician was crossing second street, when Gibbons, with an ashen club, stealthily came up to him from behind, and struck him several blows, killing him instantly. As it was the first tragic event that had occurred in the County, it created considerable excitement. Gibbons was arrested, with some difficulty, and taken to the jail at Springfield. He was indicted by the grand jury at the May term of the Circuit Court, 1618; was arraigned May 20, 1817, before David Hart, presiding judge, and was placed under bond of $1,300 for his appearance at the September term of the Court following, with Charity Byrd, Bryant Byrd, Aaron Bacon. Mary Ann McFaddin, Catherine Richard-son, Sargent Moss, Sophia Webb, Benijah Moss, Elizabeth Webb, John Bradley, (who afterwards had his neck broken by falling from a wagon) John Aldredge, Andrew McFaddin and Hyman Richardson, securities. At the same time Rachel Givens, the instigator of the crime, was indicted and held as an accessory, in the sum of $2,500, with Thomas Givens, Seth Hargraves, Nathan Smarth and David A. Mills, securities. Richard Daniel was the prosecutor, who, on June 7, 1819, entered a nolle prosequi in both cases, and Gibbons and Mrs. Givens were discharged. It is said that, soon after their liberation, Gibbons and his wife were placed in a little boat, with provisions and poisoned whisky, and set afloat on the Ohio river. Gibbons partook freely of the whisky and he died from the effects of it in a short time afterward. Before the boat was beached on the rocks on the Ohio river, on the Indiana side, above Uniontown, the wife gave birth to a child. Gibbons was buried on Hovey's Lake, in an old graveyard, near the roadside. Several years after this event, when an old woman, Mrs. Givens started for California, but while enroute over the plains she was attacked by cholera and died, and was buried in two barrels in a valley in Wyoming Territory. Mrs. Gibbons was afterward married to Joshua Kel Curtis, by whom she had five children, all of whom are highly respectable people.11 |
(Witness) Bio | From Leonard History: The family is of English descent, and was founded in the Virginia colony previous to the War of the Revolution, in which members of the family served with the Colonial troops. The first of the family to settle in Indiana was William Curtis, a native of Virginia, who came to Posey county previous to 1814, and located on land in what is now Black township. He was accompanied by a son. Thomas Cottrell Curtis, who also located in Black township, and reached the advanced age of ninety-two years, and who resided on the same farm until his death. Both were farmers, acquired valuable properties, and were men of influence in the formative period of the county. Black Township. . . Among the earliest settlers of this township were Wm. Curtis, father of Thomas, Joshua and Wm. B. (who is the father of George W., the incumbent of the County Clerk's office), and his cousin, Kel Curtis.12,3 |
