Obit | William Pennell's obituary was published in the Chronicle on 4 October 1951: William Pennell Curtis, 75, of Martinez, Ga., died yesterday at a local hospital after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held at Elliott Sons chapel this afternoon at 5 o’clock. The Rev. A.H. Simmons will officiate. Interment will be in West View cemetery. The body will be at the funeral home until the hour of th services. Mr. Curtis, a native of Wilkes county, had been a resident of Martinez for six years. He was a former grocery merchant and at one time was employed at the Country club. He was a member of Lila W. Thompson council, Daughters of America. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Ella Beagle Curtis; four stepsons, Grady S. Walker of Ninety-Six, S.C; Robert H. Walker of Augusta, G.W. Walker of Simpsonville, S.C., and Harold J. Walker of Knoxville, Tenn; stepdaughter Mrs. J.A. Porter of Asheville, N.C; two sisters, Mrs. Nannie Walker of Augusta and Mrs. Salley Franklin of Martinez, and a number of nieces and nephews.3 |

Obit | James Thomas's obituary was published in the Chronicle on 2 August 1961: James Thomas Curtis, 82, of 3315 Washington Road, died at the residence Tuesday following an extended illness. Mr. Curtis, a native of Wilkes County, Ga., has spent most of his life in Augusta. He had been retired from the Augusta Fire Dept. for some 30 years and was a former member of the Police dept. He was a member of Warren Baptist Church. He was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and a former member of the Junior Order of United American Mechanics. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Annie Wise Whatley Curtis, Martinez; a daughter, Mrs. J. Harry Welch, North Augusta; a sister Mrs. Nancy Walker, Augusta; three grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Elliott Sons Chapel by the Rev. A.H. Simmons. Interment will follow in West View Cemetery. Pallbearers will be D.F. Hall, Joe Tweedy, Fred McDonald, Edward C. Smith, Clifford C. Meeler and W.W. Wood.5 |

Obit | Julia A.'s obituary was published in the The Western Star on 29 July 1943: A long illness extending over a period of ten years proved fatal at 3:30 o'clock Wednesday morning to Mrs. Julia Anna Curtis Collier, 79, widow of W. Kader Collier, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Anderson Potts, 342 West Sixth street. She would have been 80 years old on October 30. The deceased was a life-long resident of Black township, the daughter of William B. and Elizabeth Ann Redman Curtis, members of two prominent early Black township families. Mrs. Collier was a woman of the highest Christian ideals and character and had been a member since girlhood of the Black Methodist church. Mr. Collier, a barber for 25 years and later a sawmill operator, died in 1933. Mrs. Collier had resided with her daughter since her husband's death and had been ill of creeping paralysis for nearly ten years and bedfast for the past nine months.
Nearest surviving relatives are a son, Guy Collier of Mt. Vernon; three daughters, Mrs. Walter Haynes of Evansville, Mrs. Mary David of Memphis, Tenn., and Mrs. Potts; a half-sister, Mrs. Florence McKannie of California; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A son, Earl Collier of Mt. Vernon, died last February 14.9 |
