Obit | Herman Merritt's obituary was published in the Democrat on 2 October 1954: Herman M. Curtis, 73, of 630 College avenue, an esteemed, life-long resident of Mt. Vernon and vicinity and a representative of early South Posey county families, died at 1:40 a.m. today in the Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. He had been ill for a period of only 15 days but in a critical condition during the entire time. Originally, his illness was diagnosed as leukemia. A postmortem autopsy has been performed to determine the exact cause of death. Funeral Rites Monday The body is at the Short-Niehaus Funeral Home and will remain there through the funeral service set for 2 p.m. Monday in the Short-Niehaus chapel. Officiating clergymen will be Rev. J. Kenneth Forbes, minister of First Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon, and Rev. Floyd S. Stephens, pastor of the South Mt. Vernon Methodist Parish. burial will be in the cemetery of Black Chapel, of which the deceased was a regular attender and in whose activities he had taken a prominent role. Surviving are the wife, nee Mabel Rhodes, of Mt. Vernon, whose marriage to Mr. Curtis extended over a period of almost 45 years; four children, Mrs. Adriel Schaffer, Francis Curtis, Mrs. Carl Keitel and Mrs. Robert Hast, all of Mt. Vernon; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two sister, Mrs. George Henderson, Mt. Vernon, and Mrs. Edgar Wood, Lawrenceville, Ill., and four brothers, Paul Curtis, Detroit, and Raymond, Wilford and Ralph Curtis of the Mt. Vernon community. Of Pioneer Families Mr. Curtis was a farmer in Western Black township for the greater part of his life. He was a son of Frank Curtis and Sarah Russell Curtis, members of pioneer local families. Following his years as a farmer, he moved to Mt. Vernon and for nine years was employed by thePosey County Farm Bureau Co-Op, retiring in 1945. The deceased was a Gold Star father. A son, Pvt. John E. Curtis, was a fatality of World War II in a Pacific theater.8 |

Curtis, a retired farmer, had been married to his wife Catherine for 65 years. He was a member of Black's Chapel Methodist Church. Survivors are his wife Catherine; a son, Charles Curtis of Doyline, La; four daughters, Mrs. Elnora Martinell of Ft. Collins, Colo., Mrs. Jerry McFadin of Route 4, Mt. Vernon, Barbara Curtis of Evansville and Mrs. Kathy Green of Mt. Vernon; two brothers, Paul Curtis of Smith Creek, Mich., and Ralph Curtis of Mt. Vernon; eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. The family has requested that memorial fund contributions be made to Black's Chapel Methodist Church. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Norvell Funeral Home. Burial will be in Black Cemetery.8 |

Obit | Ralph Milton's obituary was published in the Democrat on 11 January 1982: Ralph M. Curtis, 88, 618 W. Eighth St., died at Deaconess Hospital at 9 a.m. Saturday. He had been in failing health for three years. A Mt. Vernon native, he was the son of Frank M. Curtis and the former Sara Ellen Russell of western Black Township. Mr. Curtis was a retired farmer and also worked at the Wabash Memorial Bridge, as a school bus driver, and as a caretaker at Hovey Lake. He was a member of the Zoar United Methodist Church in Point Township, the Farm Bureau, the I.O.O.F., Eagles, Elks, the Conservation Club, and a charter member of the 20-20 Club. Mr. Curtis is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mrs. Nora Smith Curtis; two sons, William H. of West Terre Haute and Raymond T. of Mt. Vernon; one brother, Paul of Detroit, Mich., and granddaughter, Miss Kareahay Curtis of West Terre Haute; three step-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Mr. Curtis' funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Norvell Funeral Home, with burial to follow at Black Cemetery.11 |
