Obit | Mary's obituary was published in the Courier & Press on 10 April 1930: Mt. Vernon, April 9. Mrs. Mary Zenor Curtis, 77, wife of James B. Curtis, prominent resident of Point Township, died at her home near the Swain Bridge last night. She was born in Posey County and spent her entire life in southern Posey County. She was the mother of Robert K. Curtis, U.S. soldier who was killed in action in the Argonne Forest in France. She has been in ill health for several years and for that reason was unable to take advantage of her designation as one of the Gold Star mothers of the nation who will visit the graves of their sons overseas as the guests of the federal government. Mrs. Curtis is survived by her husband, a daughter, Mrs. Frank Baker of Point Township, and three sons, Earl of Point Township, William of Louisville, and Norman, who is in the military service. Funeral services will probably be held Thursday afternoon at Black’s Chapel west of Mt. Vernon with burial in the church cemetery.6 |

He had been critically ill since a second stroke a week ago. A native of Posey county, son of James B. Curtis who came here from South Carolina [sic], and Mary Zero Curtis, who was born in South Marrs township, the late deceased had spent his lifetime in the vicinity of Mt. Vernon except for five years residence in Kentucky. The body is at Weisinger funeral Home. It will remain there through the funeral service set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Weisinger chapel. Burial will be in Bellefontaine cemetery. Rev. Floyd S. Stephens, South Mt. Vernon Parish minister, will conduct the services. Death severed martial bonds of 46 years. Surviving are the wife, Nee Rose Weatherford; a son, Herdis M. Curtis, Centerville Station, Ill; a daughter, Mrs. Fred Ricketts, Mt. Vernon, and five grandchildren. |
