Curtis, 66, of Falls Church, Va., will be held at 12 noon Wednesday in a Falls Church, Va., funeral chapel. Burial will follow in the National Memorial Cemetery, Falls Church. Mr. Curtis died Sunday evening in the Fairfax County hospital following a year of declining health. A Randolph County native, he was born and reared in Franklinville, a son of Mrs. R.C. Curtis and the late Mr. Curtis. He graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, receiving his B.A. and M.A. degrees and where he was a Phi Beta Kappa and earned his Ph.D. at the University of Illinois. During World War II, he was a naval officer. He was a teacher at the University of Alabama, and was acting administrator of the Employment Compensation Commission of North Carolina and was Deputy Administrator of the Department of Labor, Bureau of Employment Security, Washington, D.C., from which he retired in June 1974. He received the Department of Labor’s distinguished award and represented the Labor Department in conferences with the West Germany government and at the Geneva Conferences. He was listed in “Who’s Who in America” and was a Mason, retaining his membership in Hanks Lodge at Franklinville. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Luceil Hamilton Curtis; one son, William Edward Curtis of Goldbach, Germany; two daughters, Miss Margaret Curtis of San Francisco, Calif., and Mrs. Dana W. DeVos of Coopers Mill, Maine; two grandchildren; mother, Mrs. R.C. Curtis of Franklinville; two brothers, Edison M. Curtis of Greensboro and John M. Curtis Sr., 91, will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014, at the Topsail Presbyterian Church in Hampstead, N.C. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Owen Carriker. He was born in Franklinville, N.C., son of the late R.C. and Ora Bray Curtis. After graduating from Franklinville High School, he began a career in University Education and Administration, with a parallel career of military service, both active duty and in the Army Reserve. He entered N.C. State College in Sept. 1940 and joined the Army R.O.T.C. unit there. Called to active duty in World War II, he served almost four years in the U.S. Army Infantry. After completing O.C.S., he led troops in England, France, Germany and Austria. He was awarded a number of medals, including the Bronze Star (combat), Purple Heart, and Combat Infantryman's Badge. He remained active in the U.S. Army Reserve and retired in 1976 with the rank of Colonel. He returned to N.C. State College after the war and completed his B.S. and M.S. degrees; then, enrolled in the University of Maryland for his Ph.D. degree; all degrees were in agricultural economics, with minors in economics and marketing. He married Pauline A. Dahlquist in 1948, and she was a loved and vital ally during his graduate study and throughout his career and retirement, a period of 66 1/2 years. He was a member of the faculty at V.P.I., N.C. State, and the University of Maryland for a combined total of 31 years. After working at V.P.I. and N.C.S.U., he returned to the University of Maryland as a professor and head of the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economic; and was later appointed State Director of the Maryland Cooperative Extension Service (MCES) where he served until his retirement. The MCES, with headquarters at the University of Maryland, has a staff in each county. It offers educational programs in agriculture, home economics, 4-H, resource development, marine science and others. When he retired, he was declared Professor Emeritus by the faculty and the Board of Regents of the University and the governor presented a "State of Maryland Certificate of Distinguished Citizenship." In addition to his faculty and administrative duties, he wrote a large number of articles and publications in agricultural economics, marketing and management. He consulted, led studies, and presented seminars in the U.S., Europe, Asia and Africa, and was a visiting senior scholar at the East-West Center at the University of Hawaii. He was a member of many scholastic, honor, professional, fraternal and social organizations, including Phi Kappa Phi, the Pine Burr Society at N.C. State University, fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Pi Beta Sigma, Alpha Kappa Delta, the Reserve Officers Association of the U.S., the Military Officers Association of America, the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity and others. He was a loyal member of the Topsail Presbyterian Church for many years and helped to develop its Perpetual Care Cemetery Organization. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Edison M. and wife Polly, and William R. and wife Luceil; sisters, Lillian C. Brown and husband Lloyd, Ava C. Hughes and husband Charles, and Inez C. Spencer and husbands William Lewallen and Ben Spencer. He is survived by his wife; son, John M. Curtis Jr. and wife Carol; grandson, John M. Curtis III; great-grandsons, John T. Curtis Jr., Sean K. Curtis, and Jefferson R. Curtis and his former wife, Suzanne; grandson, Charles W. Curtis; granddaughter, Jacqueline F. Curtis; Gary C. After graduating from Franklinville High School she embarked on a career in education and educational administration which spanned over four decades. She attended Campbell College in Buies Creek, N.C., and Coker College in Hartsville, S.C; and received her B.A. degree in education from High Point, N.C. University; and her Master of Education and Administration degree from UNC in Greensboro, N.C. She completed advanced studies in Educational Administration at UNC in Chapel Hill, N.C. She taught for five years in the Randolph County School System, and then devoted 35 years to the Asheboro, N.C. city schools. She was principal of the elementary school in Balfour and then moved to the Charles W. McCrary School in Asheboro, where she supervised the opening, and served as principal for 18 years. She retired in 1976. She touched the lives of hundreds of children and enjoyed the continuing contacts with them throughout her life. She was a member of many educational and professional organizations, including Alpha Delta Kappa Gamma, the Association for Childhood Education, and the N.C. Association of Education. Gov. Dan Moore appointed her to the N.C. Textbook Commission, and she served for five years. Throughout her life she was devoted to the First Baptist Church of Franklinville, N.C., and the First Presbyterian Church of Asheboro, N.C. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her first husband, William K. Lewallen of Asheboro, N.C; and her second husband, Ben L. Spence of Greensboro, N.C; brothers, Edison M. Curtis and wife Polly; William R. Curtis and wife Lucille; sisters, Lillian C. Brown and husband Lloyd; Ava C. Hughes and husband Charles. She is survived by her sister, Mary C. Wallace and husband Paul of Franklinville, N.C; a brother, John M. Curtis and wife Pauline of Hampstead, N.C; two step-daughters, Jane S. Doby and husband Troy of Raleigh, N.C; and Martha S. The family will receive friends at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, and other times at the home.5 |

Obit | Mildred's obituary was published in the Greensboro News & Record on 14 May 2006: SILER CITY- Mrs. Mildred Curtis Scott of 2267 Ed Clapp Road, left her earthly home on Friday, May 12, 2006. A funeral service will be held Monday, May 15, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Piney Grove United Methodist Church in Siler City, where she was an active member until her health began to decline. Burial will be in the church cemetery. She was the oldest daughter of Jack and Mattie Wicker Curtis, born on August 22, 1918. Mildred was a native of Liberty and graduated from Liberty High School on May 5, 1935. She served her country with honor and pride after enlisting in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps on February 14, 1943. She had her basic training at Daytona Beach, Fla. After Military Police training, she was transferred to the Boston Port of Embarkation, Boston, Mass. While stationed in Boston, she was selected as soldier of the month. She received a $50.00 War Bond, a framed certificate and a three day pass. After VE Day in Europe, she was assigned to the Seattle Port of Embarkation, Seattle, Wash. as a clerk in the Intelligence Division. After the war was over, she was discharged on February 22, 1946 at Fort Bragg as a T/Sgt. Mildred attended Kings Business College in 1946 and married Claude A. Scott of Siler City who preceded her in death in 1994 after 47 years of marriage. She is survived by a son, Ronald C. Scott of Siler City; two daughters, Ms. Cynthia S. Brown of Siler City and Sarah S. DeLuca and husband Joseph of McLeansville; six grandchildren, Kelly Daniel Elkins, Erik Brown, Blake Brown, Klaudia Brown, Brittany Scott and Ronald C. Scott II; and one great-grandchild Tristin Elkins; two sisters, Mrs. Winifred C. Humble of Liberty and Mrs. Ruth C. Butler of Burlington; one niece Annette Clarke; and one nephew Harold Humble. These, along with many cousins and friends, will miss her very much. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at Loflin Funeral Home of Liberty.7 |
