Caroline Dover and Arzelia Bradshaw gave their consent and the deed was registered and admitted to probate 7 November 1877. Thus, there appear to have been only 4 living heirs of Amos Curtis, and that Naoma was also deceased. However, the record is incomplete or confusing because Atha (Curtis) Dillingham was still living.12 |
NoteB | "Baptist Church Cemetery Persimmon District, Rabun County, Georgia (written 1940) The Persimmon District of Rabun County has been until recently almost inaccessible to automobiles of tourists. In the summer of 1939 when these records were copied, a new road was being constructed from Clayton to the Persimmon District, not town, for even at the crossroads there was a new brick school being constructed, a store, and a gasoline pump, and off about one-half mile at the top of a hill, the Persimmon Baptist church where religious services are today held every fourth Sunday. One crosses a high wooden bridge over a new clay highway which has recently divided the cemetery from its church. While this cemetery is next the church, it is more of a community graveyard and not just limited to the Baptists. The countryside is still quite primitive and one finds it a most interesting trip from Clayton. The inaccessibility of the region and its unfitness for much agriculture has made from the beginning of the county one of the chief sources of the corn whiskey for which Rabun county has long been famous in Georgia. Entire families from the early pioneers are found buried here. Graves of people born in 1802,1803, 1805, many in the 1820s, 1830s, 1840s, 1850s and on up to 1939. Here apparently come the first Yorks, Colemans, Justus, and Parkers, to mention a few. The earliest marked grave is of the year 1858 which may be that of the opening of the cemetery to burials." Note: Legible stones in the cemetery in 1939 included Amos Curtis, his son James Wesley and his daughter Arzelia Bradshaw. This article, although interesting, is incorrect with respect to the burial of Amos and his children, whose gravestones are in the Head of the Tennessee Baptist Church Cemetery at Dillard, Georgia. That cemetery is one of the nicest, most picturesque cemeteries one could hope to see.3 |
