Death* | Abigail Diantha Byrkett died on 1 January 1918 at Stella, Richardson, Nebraska, at age 77. |
Obit | Abigail Diantha's obituary was published in the Stella Press (probably) on January 1918: Abigail Diantha Byrkett was born in Tippecanoe City, Miami Co, Ohio, Mar 28, 1840, and died at 9:30 New year's morning, 1918, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Marsh Norris, west of Stella, at the age of 77 years, 9 months and 3 days. She was married to Isaiah Curtis, Oct 21, 1860. They moved from Ohio to Indiana in 1866, and from there to this locality in 1868. Mr. Curtis died in 1896, and in 1899, she moved from the farm to Stella. All last summer Mrs. Curtis was in poor health, and in September went to live with Mrs. Norris. The cause of her death was organic disease of the heart, after a lingering illness. There were six children: Mrs. J.W. Beaman of Dover, OK; Mrs. Norris and Mrs. MA Smith, both of near Stella. Dayton S., Mrs. O. C. Taylor and Mrs. Wm D. Hill preceded her in death. Mrs. Curtis raised from infancy her grandson, Loris Taylor. There are twenty-one grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. Mrs. Curtis was a good mother and leaves pleasant memories for her children and grandchildren. She joined the Christian church in Stella in 1896, and there the funeral was preached by Elder Sapp Wed. afternoon at one. The pall bearers were Col. Kennel, E.V. Pugh, E.E. Mason, B.F. McQueen, John Findlay and Joe Withee. From the children was a floral pillow with the word "mother"; from the grandchildren a spray of carnations; from the Loyal Men and Women sunday school class of which Mrs. Curtis was a member, taught by Mrs. Melissa Jenkins were three bouquets; and there were flowers from the WSE. Burial was at Prairie Union. Loris Taylor lived with Mrs. Curtis until last summer when he went to Beatrice to work in a store. She was greatly devoted to him, took great interest in his education, and her strength and life were spared until after he was graduated from the Stella school and settled in a good position with a department store in Beatrice. He was here to attend the funeral. When Mr. and Mrs. Curtis moved from Ohio to Indiana, they took with them his orphan nephew, the late Alvin Curtis, then a lad of ten years, and later he came along to NE and made his home with them until he was married. |
