Mrs. C.M. Curtis Dies in Hospital – Osceola Woman was Active Church Worker. Mrs. Charles M. Curtis, aged 67, of Osceola, this county, a lifelong resident of this community, died at 3:20 o’clock Monday afternoon in St. Joseph hospital. She had been ill six weeks.
Mrs. Curtis was born June 28, 1869, in South Bend. As Minnie Jaquith, she was married 48 years ago to Charles M. Curtis, who survives. Surviving also are three nieces and a nephew. Her only son, Jaquith Curtis, died in 1907. Mrs. Curtis had been a member of Osceola Methodist Episcopal Church since the age of 13 and was a charter member of the Missionary and Air societies of the church. During the world war, she organized the Osceola Red Cross Auxiliary and served as its president. The body may be viewed in the residence from tonight until the funeral at 3 o’clock Thursday afternoon. Rev. Edward Maynard, pastor, will conduct services in Osceola Methodist Episcopal Church. Burial will be in the Osceola cemetery.3

F. Darr, of this city. Funeral services will be held from the residence Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Dr. C. A. Lippincott, of the First Presbyterian church, will officiate. Services will be in charge of South Bend lodge No. 294, F. & A. M., Mr. Darr having been a Mason for more than 50 years. South Bend court, No. 41, Tribe of Ben-Hur, will also be represented. Burial will be in Mishawaka.6

Curtis, James Woodrow of 110 Tipperary Rd., Athens died July 9, 2001. He was the son of the late Mr. James H. and Lela Brownlow Curtis. He was preceded in death by his sister, Kathryn Curtis Trogdon. James Curtis was born in Arapalo, Oklahoma on April 15, 1917. His family returned to Georgia two years later and he grew up in Gainesville and Toccoa. Mr. Curtis received his BA Degree from the University of Georgia in 1938 and a LLB Degree in 1940. While attending the University he was president of Sigma Mu fraternity, president of the Junior Class, vice president of the student YMCA, vice president of the Panhellenic Council, a member of the Senior Round Table, Gridiron, Blue Key, Scabbard and Blade, the Law School Honor Council, Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity and the Demosthenian Society. He was also on the Intercollegiate Swimming team.
After graduation from law school and passing the Georgia Bar Exam he spent over 40 years in public service. In the Fall of 1940 he became a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and retired after 26 years of service. He was assigned to Los Angeles, Ca., Portland Oregon, Buenos Aires, Argentina, Lima, Peru, Managua, Nicaragua, Atlanta, Washington, D.C. and St. Louis, MO. He was the legal attache' in the American Embassy in Managua, Nicaragua and also in Lima, Peru. While in Managua he married Ruth Williams, a native Georgian who was in the Foreign Service of the US Department of State. After retiring from the FBI in 1966 Jim Curtis became the Director of the Institute of Continuing Education in Georgia from 1967-1982. He served two terms as president of the national organization of the Association of Continuing Legal Education Administrators. He received the Distinguished Award in Public Service from the University of Georgia and a Scroll of Appreciation from the University of Georgia Law School as well as awards from other legal organizations. Mr. Curtis was active in the Presbyterian Church both in St. Louis and in Athens. He taught Sunday school for many years and served as deacon and elder. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Athens. He was a member of the Georgia Bar Association, the Western Circuit Bar Association, the Georgia Bar Historical Society, the Law School Association, a fellow of the American Bar Foundation and a member of the Athens Country Club.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Williams Curtis of Athens, GA; three sons, James W. Curtis, Jr. and daughter in-law, Tommie Gray Curtis of Fairfax, VA; Bruce W. Curtis of Athens, GA and Lee W. Curtis of Ifrane, Morocco. A great grandson, Robert Mathew Curtis of Fairfax, VA, and a grand daughter, Grace Curtis of Villa Rica, GA. He is also survived by a nephew, George Trogdon of Lakemont, GA and a niece, Kay Trogdon Hightower of Thomaston, GA and several great nieces and nephews and one great grand niece. Graveside services will at Oconee Hill Cemetery.5
