(Witness) Bio | DR. JOHN BARNES, of Macy, was born in Harrison County Va., August 29, 1815. He was the third son born to William and Elizabeth (Hull) Barnes, natives of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, respectively; the former of German and the latter of English descent. When our subject was eleven years old his parents came to Ohio and located in Richland County, where his youth was spent working upon his father's farm. At the age of twenty-two he began the study of medicine with Dr. J. Howard of Mansheld, Ohio. After three years of preparation he entered upon the practice of medicine with Dr. John Palmer, of Leesville, Ohio. In 1845 he came to this State and located near Somerset, Wabash County, where he continued to practice his profession. He came to this county and located at Santa Fe in 1847. In the spring of 1865 he removed to Gilead, this county, and in November, 1879, he located at Macy. September 25, 1844, he was married to Nancy Bebout, a native of Richland County, Ohio, born December 29, 1823. She was the daughter of Peter and Nancy (KeIly) Bebout, both natives of Pennsylvania, the former of French and the latter of Irish descent. Mr. and Mrs. Barnes are the parents of seven children. Their names are Abram, Elizabeth, Sarah, Nathaniel, Martha A., Mary E. and Arthur W. Of these Sarah, Nathaniel and Mary E. are deceased-the first two in infancy and the last at the age of nineteen. Dr. and Mrs. Barnes are members of the M. E. church. In politics, Mr. Barnes is a Republican. He is now comfortably located in Macy, where he and his wife are spending their old days in a pleasant, happy way. He has been in the practice of medicine over forty years, and as such he has been very successful. His success is evidenced by the fact that while a resident of Wabash County he was in active practice three years without losing a single case. He has now resided in Miami County nearly forty years and is one of its most highly respected citizens. From History of Miami County, Published in 1887 by Brant and Fuller in Chicago - Allen Township. |
Death* | He died on 4 February 1899 at Macy, Miami, Indiana, at age 83; buried at Plainview Cemetery.7 |
Obit | John's obituary was published in the Rochester Sentinel on 7 February 1899: Dr. John BARNES, of Macy, died the latter part of last week. He was over eighty years old, having been one of the early settlers in Miami county, living first at Peoria and afterward at Gilead. He located in Macy about twenty years ago.8 |
(Witness) Bio | By Florence (Wagoner) Field: What Aunt Annie Shadel told about each member of this family, November 21, 1941: Mary E. married Daniel Hughes and their children were: Jane (Hughes) Harper, Sarah Ann (Hughes) Cook, and Thomas Hughes (married Elizabeth Scott). Aunt Mary married again--a Thompson and had another son, Oliver. Grover, Leroy and Fern Cook are the children of Sarah Ann (Hughes) Cook. Grandma Wagoner and Aunt Mary were especially close as sisters, and their families keep that friendship. Aunt Mary's stepdaughter, a Mrs. Cusick, lived in South Bend in the 1920's. Edith (2nd) Vest is the daughter of Jane Hughes Harper. Rebeca married a widower, Price Biggs. They had two children who lived, Marion and Viola. Marion and her sweetheart quarreled --she died shortly of tuberculosis and several days later word came of the sweetheart's death. Viola married a Henry Carrothers. They had three children, Ethel, Irene, Victor, and Carl. Carl lived near Warsaw and had seven children. He was killed by lightning several years ago. Victor lives on the home place east of Macy and has five boys. John went to Galesburg, Illinois --he had a family of three. They went to Oregon when the oldest boy died. They had two little girls, Cora and Florence. Cora (Fanster) Carroll lives in Gresham, Oregon still. Jacob married Polly Bray and Jim Fansher was their son. They separated and he married Anne Ecklebarger. John and Oliver were their sons. They live in Gaylesburg, Missouri. Grandpa and Grandma Wagoner visited them one time. They took a very nice basket of lunch and someone swiped it so they had a lunchless train ride to Missouri. Mahala was deaf and never married. She often spent time with Grandpa Wagoner's family, helping to knit stockings for the children. Aunt Rose and my father Sam often had the task of helping her get the yarn into balls. Grandpa required them to mind her, but she never told when they slipped. Hannah was Uncle Joe Warren's wife. They were married in Gaylesburg, Kansas. William died when he was 18. George was deaf and dumb and died when he was twenty or twenty-three. Andrew married Elizabeth Nichols and they lived at Lowell, Indiana. Daniel married a Funnel girl who lived near Gilead. They had two girls and two boys, Warren named for Uncle Joe, Oliver, Jenny, and Ella. Warren and Jenny live in North Dakota now. The family once lived in Crown Point, Indiana. Uncle John Barnes was a brother to Joanna Barnes Fansher. He was a doctor "a good one." He got much of his medicine from the woods. My father Samuel J. Wagoner remembers him as a snow white haired man with a white beard. Some of the things hat he gathered from the woods and their use follow in this list, but it may be inaccurate, as it is from my father's memory" Balm of Gilead buds - cough medicine; Prickly Ash buds; Blood-root; Ginseng root; Poke-berry root - cow's bloody milk; Catnip; Horse-mint; Sweet Annis roots; Indian turnip; Gentian roots; Spice bush; Sassafras; Yellow root; Snake root - healing salve; A growth like chicken lungs on prickly ash; Blue-bell roots; Sugar flower root; Calomel root; Crow-foot root; Mustard seed; Horse radish; Artichoke; Licorice root; Penneroil; Red elm bark; Sasparilla bark; Dog-fennel weed blossom. He must have been quite a naturalist along with being a doctor. He owned quite a lot of property in Macy. George Holt's mother was a first cousin to Grandma Wagoner. Their mothers were Cynthia Barnes Holt and Joanna Barnes Fansher. This friendship had been kept by the children.9 |

(Witness) Bio | THOMAS D. COFFING, a prominent farmer and stock raiser of Allen Township, was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, March 26, 1828. He was the youngest son born to Joshua P. and Mary (Davis) Coffing, both natives of Pennsylvania, the former of Dutch and the latter of Irish descent. When Thomas was eight years old his parents came westward to Ohio and located in Knox County where his youth was spent, working upon his father’s farm. There on the 29th day of April, 1848, he was married to Sophia McDaniel. She was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, March 13, 1826, being the daughter of Joel and Catharine (Smith) McDaniel who, also were natives of Pennsylvania, the former of Irish and the latter of Dutch descent. Immediately after his marriage, Mr. Coffing and wife removed to Delaware County, Ohio. There they resided on a farm about eighteen months. They then returned to Knox County, but a year and a half later they located upon a farm in Defiance County, Ohio. They came to this State and located where they now reside in the fall of 1866. The chief occupation of Mr. Coffing has been that of a farmer and breeder of fine stock. He owns a handsome farm of 160 acres of land, fitted up with good fences and buildings, and altogether a very desirable location. He has always taken especial pains to secure the best grades of stock possible. He now has some excellent specimens of Cotswold sheep, Berkshire hogs, Clydesdale and Norman horses, and his large herd of Devonshire cattle is the finest of the kind in Northern Indiana. Mr. and Mrs. Coffing are the parents of seven children, Joshua P., Mary E., Joel, Susan C., Isabel A., Lucy A., and Jackson. Of these Mary E., Joel, Isabel A. and Jackson are deceased. Mr. Coffing is a member of the Patrons of Husbandry, and independent in politics. He is also a member of the American Devon Cattle Club. Mr. Coffing was an old pioneer resident and also one of the most widely known men of his community. Born in Ohio in 1827, he moved to this county while a young man. He was the father of seven children, three of whom survive his death. His wife died about six years ago. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.6 |
