(Witness) Bio | Affidavit of Birth written by Charles L. ERVIN Record of my birth was first put in the family bible. In 1856 my father sold out his personal effects with the object of going overland to California from our home in Kosciusko County, Indiana. I never saw anything of the Bible after the sale above mentioned. I remember seeing my name in the Bible referred to among many other names of the family but where the Bible went to is beyond my saying. One incident in my early life is my Grandfather's death, the date of which was according to the tombstone at his grave with his name, date of birth & death. It says he died on April 10, 1848. I remember distinctly of riding on horseback from my Grandmother's on my Mother's side behind my uncle who lived four miles in the country to my Father's home in Leesburg, county and state above mentioned. At that date I was nearing six years old. I remember many other instances much earlier than this but am unable to give data that would be satisfactory. In 1858 when the big "commet" appeared in the West, I remember of having seen it on nights I had been out to see the girls which would indicate I was nearing manhood, and from the best evidence of my life, I can truthfully say I was born August 8, 1842. 'That's my menu' deleared Ervin, admitting, however, that he enjoys something more subsstantial with each meal but always in moderation. His life motto, he says, is Aristotle's 'excess in nothing'. "For the younger generation he advises 'the cultivation of self-control, a sense of humor, love of beautify, faith in the goodness of life and the will to make the best of even the worst of things'.
