(Witness) Bio | Harry Guy Hoover is a prominent young agriculturist and stock farmer residing one mile west of Nemaha, where he was born twenty two years ago, September 29, 1881. His father, John P. Hoover, was long a well known resident of this locality, and here he was called from this earth on the 24th of November, 1900, at the age of sixty-three years. His birth occurred in the east, but he was among the first to seek a home here, within the fine borders of Nebraska, where prosperity rewarded his efforts, and at his death he left a large estate. In this county he was united in marriage to Huldah Pavey, a native of Indiana, and here they spent nearly their entire lives and here eight children were born to bless their home, but the subject of this review is the only one of this number now living. The mother entered into eternal rest, on the 19th of November 1902, passing away in the faith of the Episcopal church, of which both she and her husband were worthy members. Mr. John P. Hoover gave his political support to the Republican party, and was a stalwart advocate of its principals. Harry Guy Hoover received his education in the schools of Nemaha, and here he has made his home. He was the sole heir of his father's large estate, consisting of two hundred and forty acres, divided into two farms, and also large herds of cattle, horses and sheep and swine. He now owns three hundred and fifty head of a fine grade of Shropshire sheep, selling from one to two car-loads annually, has sixty head of graded shorthorn cattle and has about fifteen head of horses, well adapted to the different needs of the farm. His hogs are of the graded Poland China breed, which he fattens for the market. The substantial buildings which adorn this valuable homestead were placed there by his father, and the residence is surrounded by beautiful shade and fruit trees. Mr. Hoover is a young man of excellent education, is broad-minded and patriotic and merits the genuine regard which is freely accorded him. (page 297, vol. 1.)11 |
(Witness) Bio | HOOVER, JOHNSON P., Nebraska pioneer, was born in Fulton county, Ind., Aug. 27, 1837, and died in Nemaha, Neb., Nov. 24, 1900. He was a son of Dr. Jerome and Ann (Prill) Hoover, was educated in the public schools, and at the age of eighteen years, with other members of his father's family, settled in Nemaha county, Neb. The country at that time was in its frontier state, settlements were few, and Indians more plentiful than white men. His first work was running a ferry across the Nemaha river, which he continued from 1855 until 1858. He then settled on a homestead about six miles west from the town of Nemaha. In 1865 he went into the drug business at Nemaha, and after about seven years sold it, and again resumed farming, having acquired a fine farm about a mile from the town. He gave particular attention to stock raising, and was one of the first-to engage in the breeding of blooded cattle and hogs, in which he was highly successful. In 1882 he went to Oregon, and later spent some time in what was then Washington territory. He was inclined to engage in the lumber business at Walla Walla in an extensive way, but the climate did not agree with his health, and after two years he returned to his Nebraska farm. He was a man of great energy and enterprise, a life-long republican, a member of the Episcopal church, and was active in charitable and philanthropic work. He was married May 15, 1861, to Miss Hulda: the daughter of Garrison and Celia (Cumming) Pavey of Nemaha. Eight children were born to them, only one of whom is living--Harry Guy Hoover, who resides with his widowed mother and looks after the property left by his father to his mother and himself. The Hoover homestead farm is one of the best improved in the vicinity of Nemaha. Besides the farm Mr. Hoover was the owner of much other valuable property. page 679. |

Obit | Harriett's obituary was published in the Nemaha County Herald on 11 February 1921: HARRIET HOOVER PASSES AWAY AT DENVER. Early Settler of Brownville, and a Loved Former Resident of Nemaha Died Last Friday- Remains Were Taken to Brownville for Burial at Walnut Hill The remains of Mrs. Harriett A. F, Hoover an early settler of Brownville who died at Denver, Colorado at 2 A.M. Friday February 4 were laid to rest, Monday, at Walnut Hill Cemetery, Brownville. Mrs. Harriett Hoover was 75 years of age at the time of her death. She was born at Tippecanoe, Ohio, and her parents moved to Brownville in 1860. Their names were Favorite. Mrs. Hoover became the bride of William Hoover in Brownville on November 10, 1862. He was one of the prominent young men of the town and at the time was a clerk in the Carson Bank. Later he became an abstracter and continued at that business for many years. When the county seat was moved from Brownville to Auburn he moved to Lincoln where the family resided for some years, Mr. Hoover diced at Lincoln June 10, 1891, and his wife returned to this county, building a fine home at Nemaha where she lived for a number of years. She was exceedingly charitable of heart, mind and purse and her warm sympathies made her the friend of those with whom she came in contact. Mrs. Hoover was a woman of great social charm and an ideal type of the cultural refined woman. She was a loyal friend and a splendid neighbor and she left the impression of her mind on the community in which she lived for so many years. She was possessed of a deeply spiritual nature and some years ago embraced the Christian Science faith which she practiced to the time of her death. She had been a resident of Denver for the past decade. She is survived by her daughters, Mrs. A.F. Walsh and Mrs. Helen Robinson of Denver. When she became seriously ill Frank Woodward of Nemaha went to Denver and was with the members of the family when Mrs. Hoover passed away.
