(Witness) Bio | Levi Burch, one of the most highly esteemed citizens of Henry Township was born in the city of Cincinnati, January 24, 1820, and is of English-German ancestry. In his early childhood, he removed to Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, where his father, Arnold Burch, had a contract on the Cincinnati & Erie Canal, at that time being constructed through that locality. The family afterward located in Putnam County, Ohio, and from there they came to this county in about the year 1841. Mr. Burch's advantages at school were of necessity very limited, having spent his childhood, youth and early manhood on the frontier; yet by making use of the opportunities afforded him, he obtained a very good common education. Mr. Burch was united in marriage, February 3, 1842, to Miss Eliza Ann Hoover, who was born in Miami County, Ohio, March 7, 1825. Her father, Henry Hoover, was also a pioneer from childhood, and had the privilege of only three months of school, yet by his industry and diligence at home secured a very good education, which enabled him to successfully fill the position of County Surveyor, being the first man elected to that position in this county. He was the man for whom Henry Township was named, and was one of its earliest white inhabitants, having located there in the spring of 1836 on the farm now owned by Mr. Burch. He was a native of Miami County, Ohio, where he spent his early life assisting in the duties of the pioneer farmer. Shortly after his marriage, Mr. B. located where he now resides, and by untiring energy soon succeeded in reducing the forest to valuable fields. In a few years, the primitive cabins gave way to commodious frame farm buildings. At the breaking-out of the civil war, he enlisted in Company K, Forty Sixth Indiana Infantry, and participated in all the engagements of that regiment until it arrived at Memphis, Tenn., where he was prostrated by disease, from which he received his discharge. In the summer of 1864, he was drafted and served while the war lasted, in the Ninth Indiana Infantry. Returning home, he was elected Justice of the Peace, a position he had filled before the war, and has filled almost continuously ever since. The married life of Mr. and Mrs. Burch has been blessed with eight children, of whom six are living--Jerome H., Mary, Elizabeth B., Sarah, Arnold and John B., all of whom are married and respected citizens. Mr. and Mrs. B. have for many years been consistent members of the Methodist Episcopal Church and are living in hope of a blessed immortality hereafter.2 |

(Witness) Obit | Wanda Mae Chalk witnessed the Obit of Thomas Leon Brown on 17 July 1946 at Rochester Sentinel, Rochester, Fulton, Indiana, Thomas Leon BROWN, aged 20, was killed instantly at 5:30 o’clock this morning when his automobile was strck by an eastbound Erie express train. The tragedy took place three and one-half miles north of the Fred Moore farm on state road 14. The youth, driving a 1932 Chevrolet sedan, was going north when express train No. 12 approached from the west. It is reported that Brown evidently saw the train coming and swerved to the right on the crossing. He drove his car down the right-of-way for an estimated 25 feet with the tires straddling the rails before the engine crashed into his car. The impact of the onrushing train tossed Brown’s automobile 100 feet east of the crossing. He was killed instantly and the car, which was demolished, landed on its wheels on the right-of-way. Engineer George F. STELLER of Huntington, who was at the throttle of the locomotive, stated today that he didn’t see the automobile until just before the crash. He added that when he saw the car on the crossing tracks it was too late to pull the emergency brake. The engine was damaged to such an extent that a change of engines was necessary when No. 12 pulled into Huntington. The other crewmen of the train included D. M. DEERWESTER, fireman, and C. A. OTT, conductor. Both are Huntington residents. Fulton County Coroner Dean K. STINSON and Assistant Coroner Dale BERKEBILE recorded the death as accidental. Thomas Brown, the youth who was killed, was a former attendant of the Standard Oil service station at the junction of U.S. highway 31 and state road 25, Rochester. He had been employed there for four months, resigning three weeks ago to operate a dairy route. He resided with his wife at her father’s farm on Macy route one, two and one-half miles south of the Mt. Zion community. The youth was born in Kokomo May 28, 1926, and had lived near Rochester for the past three years. He was reared in Miami county. On Nov. 23, 1945, he was united in marriage to Wanda Mae CHALK. His parents were Avert and Grace BROWN. His father died in March.
