Death*Althea Mae Buell died on 13 March 2005 at Castle Rock, Cowlitz, Washington, at age 85.4
ObitAlthea Mae's obituary was published in the The Daily News on 27 March 2005:
When it came to family, Castle Rock's Althea Crayne was an expert. Crayne, 85, was the mother of seven children, step-mother to seven more and had dozens of grandchildren of the grand, great and great-great variety. When her own children were grown Crayne baby-sat others, and after her husband's death in 1987 she volunteered as a Foster Grandmother through the Head Start program in Castle Rock. "She was just good with kids," said daughter Ida Langdon of Castle Rock. "She listened to the stories that they'd tell, read to them, color with them, whatever activity they wanted to do." At the time of her death on March 13, Crayne had 18 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Several made trips to see her in the past months, knowing that the heart failure that slowed Crayne down in the past few years would soon claim her life. "Oh she loved them all," Langdon said. "In fact, in the last few days we brought one of the great-great-grandchildren in to see her and she just beamed. It really brought her alive to have them there."

The funeral drew 70 relatives, and the annual Crayne family reunion each August draws more than 100. Langdon said her mother never had trouble keeping names straight, but daughter Karen Rings, of Olympia, said Crayne did keep meticulous notes of birth dates and offspring. Those notes have been invaluable in notifying the large extended family of her death, Rings said. Crayne was married 49 years and the union started off with a bang -- she and Charles Crayne eloped from Wyoming a few days before her 18th birthday. They stopped in Paris, Idaho, for the Jan. 4, 1938, wedding and kept driving west so she could get her first glimpse of the ocean. They stayed in the local area the rest of their marriage, spending most of it on a farm in Castle Rock. Charles Crayne already had seven children. Rings doubts her mother meant to add another seven when she first married. "I can't say she started out wanting that many, but I don't think she would have given any of us back," Rings said. The stepchildren were older, but they visited often and kept in touch with their siblings, Rings said. In her eulogy, granddaughter Teresa Nye said Crayne lived in the 20th century, but "her childhood was filled with the adventures of pioneer life." She rode a horse three miles to a one-room schoolhouse in Wyoming and once was struck by a rattlesnake, with only her thick leather boots standing between her and a poisonous bite. As a young mother Crayne lived in a farmhouse in Castle Rock without plumbing or electricity. "The children did a lot of the milking of the cows and we had chickens and she and the kids all gathered the eggs," Langdon said. "We all shared the responsibility of the home." Rings remembers Crayne as adapting to any situation with ease and grace, which came in handy while raising her large brood. Once, in the 1950s, Rings and her sisters were visiting Tacoma and returned home with a car full of homesick Fort Lewis soldiers behind them. It was 2 a.m., but Crayne "got up and made us all cookies," Rings said. "She just never got ruffled," Rings said.5
