Marriage* | She married Walter Simeon Woodward, son of Charles Henry Woodward and Salena Field, on 4 May 1930 at Independence, Jackson, Missouri; Among the People in Zion A wedding of more than usual interest to the people of Independence followed the sacramental service at the Stone Church last Sunday morning when Miss Bertha Constance became the bride of Walter F. Woodward, of Council Bluffs, Iowa. The ceremony was made singularly impressive by its beauty and simplicity. A chorus of ten young girls dressed in white and carrying flowers, accompanied the bridal party into the church singing a cappella "Onward to Zion." The double ring marriage ceremony was read by Apostle P. Henry Edwards. The bride was given in marriage by her father, Charles D. Constance. Miss Elsie Constance, a cousin, attended the bride, and the bridegroom was accompanied by Elder Robert Jones. For a number of years Sister Woodward has been known in Independence for her excellent work in the Department of Religious Education, in the Independence Institute of Arts and Sciences, and in the summer vacation schools. Last year she took her B. A. degree from Northwestern University. Brother Woodward was given his first missionary appointment by the Centennial Conference, and soon will take his bride to his mission field, Far West Stake. The happy couple left Sunday for a short wedding trip to Council Bluffs. Friends in Independence wish them a long life of usefulness and joy. The Saints' Herald for May 7, 1930 VOLUME 77 515.1,4,3 |

Death* | Dorothy Lanell Young died on 11 June 2006 at Aledo, Parker, Texas, at age 85.5 |
Obit | Dorothy Lanell's obituary was published in the Abilene Reporter-News on 16 June 2006: Dorothy LaNell Young Blanks Longtime area resident, Dorothy Blanks, 85, passed from this world Sunday at Baylor-All Saints Hospital in Fort Worth. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 17, 2006, in Elmwood Memorial Park, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Highway 277 South. Mrs. Blanks, born June 9, 1921, in Abilene, Texas, spent her early years on the family farm near Hawley, Texas, and was educated through high school in Hawley, often riding her pony, Fritz, to school. She attended Texas Women's University prior to marrying Lyston E. Blanks in Hawley in 1941. She moved to several locations around the U.S., finding temporary employment in order to be near her husband as he served in the U.S.Army Air Corps during World War II. Following the war, she returned with Lyston to Abilene where they started their family, and she supported him in the ownership and operation of several downtown restaurants. From 1952 to 1972, she and her family lived in Clyde, Texas, where she was very active in the Church of Christ and a variety of volunteer activities. In 1972, they moved closer to her husband's roots near Caps, Texas and resumed both families' tradition of farming and ranching. From that time, she became very active in the Southern Hills Church of Christ in Abilene and performed extensive volunteer work, as health would allow, at the Christian Service Center in Abilene, with Meals on Wheels, and with other charitable activities. Following Lyston's death in 1999, she moved to Abilene where she lived until moving to Aledo, Texas in 2005. Mrs. Blanks was widely known for her love, devotion, and sacrifice for her family and her church. She was admired for being a self-starter and a problem-solver with a high energy level and unusual initiative. She is survived by her four children, eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Her children are Dan and Charlotte Blanks of Dallas, Texas; Mickey and Pam Blanks of Temple, Texas; Terry and Susan Blanks of Haskell, Texas; and Judy Hunter and Paul Scofield of Aledo, Texas. Grandchildren are Mollie LaNell and Justin Beam of Temple, Texas; Melanie Blanks of Halthom City, Texas; Matt and Stephanie Blanks of San Antonio, Texas; Jeff and Braid Blanks of Trent, Texas; Brady Blanks of Temple, Texas; Brad Blanks, a student at Abilene Christian University; Sarah Hunter, a student at Auburn University; and Daniel Lyston Hunter of Aledo, Texas. Great grandchildren are Brenden, Ashlyn, Kayden, and Maegan Beam of Temple, Texas. Dorothy LaNell Young Blanks A vigorous child of the great depression, She viewed hard labor as a kind of perk. Doing for others being her main obsession, She never learned just how to "not work". Faithful companion, from him seldom parted, They faced what life brought, both good and bad. Now she's back near to where they first started, Once again hand in hand with our Dad. Fine mother to four and revered as a wife. Such a rich harvest requires no amends. Further she gave us our key rule for lifeRespect each other and always be friends. Though she would surely never have thought such, There are many who owe her their thanks. For only herself, she certainly never sought much, Our loving Mom, Dorothy LaNell Young Blanks. Danny, Mickey, Terry, and Judy.4 |

(Witness) Bio | IRA B. HURST, one of the enterprising young farmers of Allen Township, was born in the township in which he resides July 6, 1851. He was the third son born to John W. and Ann W. (Hays) Hurst, who located in this county in 1846. Ira spent his early life working upon a farm. He was left without a father at the early age of two years. Shortly afterward he accompanied his widowed mother to Pickaway County, Ohio, the former home of his mother. When he was thirteen years old, or in the spring of 1864 they returned to this county and again located in Allen Township. The youth of our subject was spent working upon a farm, by the month. At the age of fifteen he began doing farm work for his uncle James W. Hurst, in whose employ he remained about seven years during the last five of which he clerked in a store and assisted the latter in the stock and grain business. He then engaged in the mercantile business in connection with his brother Levi J Hurst. He was thus engaged between seven and eight years. In January, 1883, he accepted a position as agent for I., P. & C.R.R. Co. at Macy, still retaining as partner his brother, L.J. Hurst. They were also engaged in the lumber business. This position he filled with credit to himself until March 8, 1886, at which time he resigned and removed to a farm in Section 1, Allen Township. He was married February 1, 1874, to Ella J. Horton, by whom he has had five children - Ira A., Ethel S., Bertha, Mary and one infant son who died in infancy unnamed. Mr. and Mrs. Hurst are members of the Christian Church. He is a member of the F. & A. M. Lodge, and at present holds the position of W. M. in Lincoln Lodge, No.523. He is a Prohibitionist. He is an intelligent and enterprising young man. From History of Miami County, Published in 1887 by Brant and Fuller in Chicago - Allen Township. |

Obit | Mary I.'s obituary was published in the Rochester Sentinel on 10 February 1915: Little Mary [HURST], two year old daughter of Mrs. Bessie HURST, died at 1:45 o’clock Wednesday afternoon as the result of having taken tablets containing arsenic, which had been left as a tonic for her eight year old brother, George [HURST], and which she thought was candy. The little girl took the tablets at noon and lived but a short time, despite the efforts of doctors. She was the youngest of four children. The father died over two years ago. The tablets which caused the child’s death were left at the house a few days ago by the physician who was attending George Hurst. The brother had been recently removed from the local hospital where he suffered an operation for appendicitis and the tablets were tiven him for a tonic. Knowing that the tablets were dangerous Mrs. Hurst placed them in the top shelf of the kitchen capinet. A few minutes after noon the little girl told her mother that she had eaten the candy and upon investigation Mrs. Hurst discovered that her daughter had consumed four of the deadly pills. The Doctors GOULD were summoned but all efforts on their part proved unavailing. The child passed from one convulsion to another and died shortly before two o’clock. The victim was the daughter of Ira HURST who died at Wagoner’s before the child was born. About one year ago Mrs. Hurst and her four children moved to Rochester and have resided on south Monroe street. Mrs. Hurst is the foster daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan DAWSON.
