Obit

Adam's obituary was published in the Rochester Sentinel on 8 May 1922:

Adam ZEGAFUSE, 26, son of Mr. and Mrs. John ZEGAFUSE, killed himself at the home of his parents, five miles west of Rochester Sunday afternoon at about 4:30 o'clock. A verdict of death by suicide was pronounced by Dr. A. E. STINSON, Fulton county coroner. Mr. and Mrs. John Zegafuse had gone to Rochester Sunday afternoon to attend the Sunday school rally, and had left the son at home alone. They were returning to the home, which they reached at 4:35 o'clock in the afternoon and entered the house. As Mr. Zegafuse started to step into the living room he saw his son, Adam, lying on the floor with the entire top of his head blown off. He attempted to intercept Mrs. Zegafuse, who followed him, but failed in this and both rushed to the boy's side. Both believed that he was still breathing when they reached him, but this is hardly thought possible by Dr. Stinson, who was summoned soon after. Zegafuse had evidently held the end of a double-barreled shot gun to his head at a point just behind the right ear and then stooped over and pulled the trigger. He had fallen in his tracks and lay there where his parents found him. The body was still warm and the room was filled with smoke from the discharge of the shot gun, which leads to the belief that he had committed the act but a few minutes before his parents entered the house, or reached the prmises, as they did not hear the report of the weapon. They believe that he must have seen them approaching from a distance and then fired the fatal shot.

His parents can assign no reason for the act, and they stick to the theory that his death was accidental, altho they can see no reason why he should have had the shot gun in the living room on Sunday afternoon. The theory advanced by friends, however, is to the effect that he was grieving over the death of Howard CURTIS, who committed suicide a number of days ago, and at whose funeral Zegafuse had acted as pall bearer. As the two young men were not close friends, however, this seems also to be improbable. The father, however, stated that his son, who always was quiet of disposition and had little to say at any time, grew even more moody after the Curtis suicide. He had no love affairs, nor sickness or trouble of any kind that are known to his parents or friends, and having left behind no messages of any kind, the reason for his act may always remain a complete mystery.

Adam Zegafuse was born in Fulton County at the farm home where he ended his life December 2, 1895. He had always lived on the farm with his parents and had no brothers or sisters. The body was taken to a Rochester undertaking establishment Sunday afternoon but removed to the home Monday. Funeral services from the Evangelical church at Rochester Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock. Burial at I.O.O.F. cemetery.²

Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Albert Ricketts will accompany Rusty Hancock on the organ as he sings "The Old Rugged Cross" and "How Great Thou Art."
Pallbearers will be grandsons Ronnie Field, Terry Field, Mike Field, David Field, Dennis Field, Douglas Field, Wendell Field, Jackie Dooley and Wesley Ritchey. Leo J. Field, 74, who had spent more than half of his life in the Dalhart area, died Sunday at 1:15 p.m. in his home, 523 Denrock Ave. He had been in failing health for some time. Funeral services are being held this afternoon at 4:00 in the First Baptist Church, where he and his wife, Faye, have been longtime members and faithful workers. Dr. Roy D. Collins will be in charge of services. Mrs. Duane McClure will be pianist and Mrs. Weldon Newsom, organist, and Choir Director McClure will direct the congregation in singing the Battle Hymn of The Republic, and Amazing Grace.
Pallbearers are nephews: Connie Field, Tim Field Jr., Rev. Robert Field, James B. Field, David Mack Field, Lewis Field and Albert Field. Honorary pallbearers are: Don Watson, Morris Gully, Richard and Garry Chumley, Gail Castleberry, A.T. Bridgeman, Pete Clements, Dale Childers, Jerry West, Pete Metcalf and Neal Freeman. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery under direction of Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors.
Mr. Field was born May 1¸1903 in Abilene. He came to Dalhart 40 years ago. His wife is the former Faye Murray, and they have been engaged in farming and ranching here. Survivors, in addition to his wife, are: four sons James Murray and Ell Dee, both of Delhart; Leo N. of Weatherford, Okla. And Joseph of Midland; eleven grandchildren; three brothers, Tim of Dalhart, W.C. of Amarillo, and Pat of Lubbock; three sisters, Mrs. Howard (Virginia) Medlock of Lubbock, Mrs. Pete (Ruth) Crawford of Grand Falls, Tex., and Mrs. Eva Kennedy of Amarillo.

Elizabeth (Bettie)'s obituary was published in the Big Spring (Texas) Herald on 6 May 1965:

Mrs. Field's Rites Friday. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday for Mrs. Bettie Field, 88, who died at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday in a local hospital after a brief illness. Mrs. Field and her husband had moved to Howard County in 1907.

Mrs. Field was born April 8, 1877 in Limestone County, Tex., and married Birt Field in 1904 in Jones County. She was preceded in death by Mr. Field in 1949 and by a son, Sam, in 1954.

Services will be at Nalley-Pickle Rosewood Chapel, with burial in City Cemetery. Survivors include one son, Fred Field, Crane; two daughters, Mrs. Ruben Schuessler, Goldsmith, Tex., and Mrs. A.F. Lehman, Odessa; one sister, Mrs. Sally Chapman, Lamesa, seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
