Obit | John's obituary was published in the Harper County Newspapers on 26 September 1902: Harper Sentinel, Friday, 26 Sep 1902 John Field, eighty years of age, hung himself on an apple tree in the orchard at his home south of Danville one week ago last Tuesday. The body was not found until the following Friday. The family with whom he lived thought that he was in Danville, to which place he had gone to stay with relatives for a few days. It seems he was not welcomed there and the old man returned, first buying some new rope. He did not go to the house, but stopped in the orchard, and there his lifeless body was found three days later. He was buried Saturday at Danville. Harper Advocate, Friday, 26 Sep 1902 John Field committed suicide by hanging himself to a tree at his sons, J.R. Field, four miles south of Danville, on Tuesday of last week. He was not found until Friday. Mr. Field left a sons in Danville on the 16th and that was the last time he was seen alive. No cause for the rash deed is known. He was 80 years old. Anthony Republican, Friday, 26 Sep 1902 Word was brought into town Friday morning that the body of John Field, father of J. R. Field, had been found hanging in a tree in the orchard on the F. T. Little farm, three miles northwest of town, of which J. R. Field is tenant. Justice of the peace, Dr. Hazie, with four or five men, went at once to the farm and cut the body down, had a jury empaneled and an inquest held. The body was decomposed showing that it had been hanging two or three days. He had not been seen about the place since Monday, but it was supposed he was at another son's in Danville. He was about 68 or 70 years of age [sic], The funeral services were held Saturday, conducted by Rev. Baker of the M. E. church and the body buried in the Danville cemetery. |

NoteB | The first sawmill in Scott Township was a water-powered mill, established on Pigeon Creek, in the southwest quarter of section 15, and was put into operation about the year 1845. Just who owned this mill at first is not known but in 1853 and thereafter it was known as Cline's Mill, as that was the name of the man who owned the land on which the mill was located at that time. This mill was operated for a time by John Kissinger, and he and his family lived in the upper story. Later it was operated for a time by John and Samuel Ranney. At this mill much of the lumber for the early homes in Scott Township was sawed. It did a thriving business until about the year of 1870, when it was closed down forever, and other steam-powered sawmills came into existence.9 |
