Obit | Alice's obituary was published in the Carson Critic on 23 February 1928: ANOTHER OLD RESIDENT CALLED AWAY Mrs. Alice Otto of Macedonia, one of the oldest residents of this locality, died at the hospital in Council Bluffs Tuesday morning. She was of advanced age and lately suffered a fractured hip, and from this injury there was little hope of her recovery. Mrs. Otto was the widow of "Jap" Otto, and the daughter of Thomas Connor, two well known residents of the Grove in earlier days. 23 Feb 1928 Carson Critic A PIONEER LADY HAS FINISHED LIFE's LABOR Alice, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Connor, born Oct. 13, 1844 in Summitt, Ohio, has passed away but a few hours after the break of day, Feb. 21, 1928, at the age of 88 years 1 month and 8 days. On Jan 23rd she suffered the misfortune of a bad fall and after all the medical skill and patient comforting aid could do for her. In 1854 [note: should be earlier] at the age of ten, she came with her parents to Iowa by means of an oxen and settled on a farm in Grove Township, in which township she lived for 13 years. She received her education with the meager opportunities of those days. On Dec. 25, 1868, she was united in marriage to Jasper Otto. They settled not far from the paternal home on a farm which is now occupied by her niece, Mrs. Harvey Bolton and family. To this union the Lord granted no children, but Uncle Jap and Aunt Alice was home to many children of the community. On Dec. 26, 1895, this union was severed by Uncle Jap's death, they having been granted 27 years of happy companionship. In August 1908, she left the old farm home and moved to Macedonia where she and her only other niece, Kate Connor, made their home together. Aunt Alice, being one of the pioneer settlers saw many changes in the country, but even unto the end she did not live in the past but was always eager and willing to accept the more modern ways, and enjoyed living every day because of her zeal for progress. She was a woman of pleasant personality, even temperament and thoughtful and refined disposition. She built her loving character by her yesterdays, todays and tomorrows and not by popular fame. A character so molded has meant so much in the lives of relatives and scores of friends that for many years she has been Aunt Alice to each and everyone. Aunt Alice was not a leader though in earlier years she united with the Christian Church for an active member of any other organizations, but was indeed a faithful follower. [microfilm is very faint] She was anxious to lend a motherly hand to those in need. She was always fortunate in enjoying unusually good health, and by many she will be remembered by a gift of her beautiful handiwork as well as her deeds. She leaves to mourn her, two nieces, four great nieces, three great nephews, two great-great nieces, and two great-great nephews. She walks in beauty, like the night of cloudless chimes and starry skies, and on the check and err that brow so soft, so calm, yet elegant; the smiles that win, the tints that glow but tell of days but goodness spent--a mind at peace with all below. A heart whose heart is pure. A funeral services were conducted Thursday p.m. by Rev. J. Boyd Stevensen from the Presbyterian Church in Macedonia. Carson Critic 1 Mar 1928.9 |
