Obit | Frederick's obituary was published in the Unknown Newspaper on circa 20 February 1913: Life Work is Finished Allen Township Pioneer Citizen Laid to Rest Frederick Slisher Dies at His Home in Macy After Weeks of Suffering Frederick Slisher died at his home in Macy early Saturday morning from the effects of an attack of gangrene incident to old age from which he had been a sufferer for several weeks. Frederic Slisher was one of a family of seven sons and seven daughters. He was born in Bavaria, Germany, January 1,1837 and after an eventful life, covering a period of seventy-six years, one month and fourteen days he passed out of this world, at Macy, Indiana, February 15,1913. On the 11th day of January 1857 he was united in matrimony with Miss Lucinda Mohler, near Maxville, Perry County, Ohio. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Slisher: Charles Slisher, Lucy Cook, Susan Barfield Mary Collins, Margaret Slisher, Emma Ewing, John Slisher and Phoebe having passed away some years ago. There are eighteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren, and of his six brothers and seven sisters, only one sister is left to mourn his departure, Mrs. Mary Poling, of Straightville, Ohio. There is left also the widow who has borne with him the heat, the burden, the sunshine the shadow, the joys and the sorrows of his dear life, many friends and neighbors together with those who kept step with him in the ranks of war, and fought with him on fields of battle that in his decease they have bid farewell to a good man. A generous neighbor, a trustworthy friend, a patriot, a Christian. On May 26, 1855, he was received into full communion in the Evangelical Lutheran Church at Monday Creek, Perry County, Ohio. August 16, 1862, he enlisted in the United States Army. September 9, 1862,he was mustered into service at Camp Circleville, Ohio, as a private of Co. G. 114th regiment, Ohio volunteer infantry, under Capt. E. Brown, and Col. Cradlebaugh, to serve three years, or during the war. During this time of service he was in the hospital 10 months. He participated in the following engagements: Chickasaw, Arkansas Pass, Thompson's Hill, Champion Hill, Big Black River, Siege of Vicksburg, Sabine Cross Road, and Fort Blakely. He was honorably discharged July 31, 1865 at Columbus Ohio. In October of 1865 he with his family came to Miami County, Indiana, and settled on a farm at which place he has resided until something like a year ago, when he removed to Macy, where he has lived until his end came. He united with the Methodist Episcopal Church at Macy, October 28,1888 under the pastorate of Rev. Benefield Sawyer. Since coming into the church, Brother Slisher's life has been one of Christian virtue and faithfulness. He has been the recipient of the respect and confidence of those with whom he has lived and associated. He was a man of vary industrious habits. Thoroughly honest, ready to extend sympathy to those in sorrow and help to those in need. His life has been full of labor, trial and care. His last days were of intense suffering and physical pain, but amid it all he showed the spirit of Christian patience and fortitude, again and again he expressed his readiness to meet the lord. He held no fear of death, no foreboding of the future, his life is a history of strength and determination. We pray the blessing of god upon his mourning widow his weeping children, his only sister, and all who gathered to bid him the last, long farewell. But let us not weep as those who have no hope, for in a few days we will meet him again to live with him forever. Funeral services were held in the Methodist Episcopal Church Monday morning at 11:00 and Rev. R.H. Kennedy was in charge. |

No cause is known for his act. Collins, who lived with his wife on a small farm which they owned, had spent the morning in Macy, where nothing unusual in his conduct was noticed. He visited his daughter, Mrs. E. U. SLIFER, and then returned home. After eating dinner, he read a newspaper, then got up, looked out into the yard, went upstairs and killed himself. His wife, hearing the report of the pistol, found the body immediately, and called Dr. P. B. CARTER of Macy, who in turn called Coroner S. B. ROTH of Kewanna. Besides the widow and daughter, there survive four sons: Francis [COLLINS], who lives west of this city, Fred [COLLINS], a Fulton restaurant owner, and Charles [COLLINS] and Roy [COLLINS], farmers near Macy. Little cause for the deed could be learned, except that it was ascertained that Collins quarreled with members of his family at times, and contrary to the first report, that he drank occasionally. However, there was no evidence to show that either was the immediate cause. The funeral was held Monday afternoon.8 |
