Obit* | Samuel's obituary was published in the Rochester Sentinel on 1 February 1924: Samuel JOHNSON, 84, one of the pioneer residents of Fulton county who has lived on one farm in Henry Township in the Sugar Grove neighborhood practically all of his life, died at his farm home Thursday afternoon at three o’clock, a victim of old age and complications. He had been ill for the past four years, but the critical sickness that resulted in death was but of short duration. Born on the farm where he died January 2, 1840, Samuel Johnson followed the footsteps of his father, that of tilling the soil, which occupation he followed during his entire life. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having served a little over four years in the 46th Indiana infantry. All of his life with the exception of these years, and two other years spent on a farm in the same neighborhood, he lived at the old JOHNSON homestead. He was married July 4, 1866, and to this union were born two children, Dora JOHNSON, of this city, and Arthur JOHNSON, of Peru, who with the widow, Mrs. Jemima JOHNSON and a brother, Enos JOHNSON also of Henry township, survive. He was always active in the politics of his township and county, having held office as trustee on two occasions and having been a candidate for county commissioner on the republican ticket on two other occasions. Funeral services from the home Saturday afternoon at two o’clock. Rev. J. W. NIVEN in charge. Burial at Akron I.O.O.F. cemetery. Further information on Johnson Family: Scott Johnson, born 1890, lives south of Athens which is R. 1, Akron, in 1978. His grandfather, Samuel Johnson, came to Indiana in a covered wagon from Virginia. Sam’s father brought his wife and children to Indiana and settled in Fulton County. Then he went back to Virginia and was never heard from again. The family thinks he might have drowned in the Ohio River or been killed by Indians. Sam was in the Libby prison in the Civil War and never talked about it or why his father disappeared. He was in Libby prison for 9 months. Sam raised his own children and Oliver Crismore and three of the Burkett children. Oliver Crismore attended Sugar Grove school and his school books are in FCHS museum. In the front of his books Oliver wrote his name and address as Sidconger, Ind. Sidconger was the post office in a country store by Sugar Grove school.3 |

(Witness) NoteB | The Rochester Sentinel - Wednesday, September 15, 1886 BIOG - In the divorce case of McCLURE vs McCLURE, wherein Mrs. Clara McCLURE asked the court to grant her a divorce from her husband and the custody of her two year old baby. His Honor decided in favor of the plaintiff on the condition that the defendant be allowed to visit his child, and that Mrs. Clara’s father, Doc. JOHNSON, give an obligation of $500 to care properly for the child, which he did. It will be remembered that Jesse McCLURE, the defendant, had considerable newspaper notoriety last March for taking his baby from its mother while her father was away, and has since kept it near Logansport. Much conflicting evidence was introduced as to McClure’s violent character and abuse of his wife, but the fact of his having no home, except where he worked, to keep the child, seemed to impress the court with the idea that the child would be best cared for by the mother, who could give more attention to its proper training, and he so decided. Both parties are from respectable families, but the general drift of the evidence seemed to substantiate the charge in the complaint that the defendant was very irritable at times and could not control his wrath in such a manner as a dutiful father and husband should. Monday, October 26, 1903 A special from Marion to the Indianapolis Star tells of a terrible crime committed near Point Isabell, Grant county, Sunday afternoon. Thomas Jesse McCLURE, a farm hand about forty, separated from his wife, went to visit her and see his little boys, aged 4 and 2 years respectively. He had candy and nuts for them and took them out for a ride. When he had driven about ‘till they fell asleep he took his revolver and shot each of them in the head killing the oldest one instantly and mortally wounding the other. Then he laid them down by the road side and drove to Marion and gave himself up. A mob gathered to hang him and he was taken to the Indianapolis jail. From the description of the man and the name it is believed here that he was the same Jesse McCLURE who grew up at Twelve Mile and afterwards married a daughter of “Doc” JOHNSON at Millark. McClure was so mean to this wife she got a divorce from him and he afterwards tried to get the child but was foiled. Since then, which was twelve years ago, he left this part of the country and has never been back.10 |

(Witness) Bio | Peru Republican, Jan 14, 1927 Sixty Years Wedded and Happy. Mr. and Mrs. I.D. Johnson (picture). A romance that culminated in marriage between Miss Almeda Zartman and I.D. Johnson sixty years ago still exists, in spite of the changes of time, and “Home” with its sacred ties, built with thoughts and sentiments, of love, remains the same, only strengthened with the hardships of the years. Mrs. and Mrs. Johnson both were natives of Ohio, the former born in Miami county in 1844, and the latter in Perry county, 1847. Both displayed great patriotism during the Civil War, Mrs. Johnson serving two and a half years as a member of the 46th Indiana Volunteers, and Mrs. Johnson beating the drum for a drum corps at rallies. Their marriage took place in the Zartman school house two miles north of Macy, Miami county, Indiana, Jan. 9, 1867 in the presence of a large number of relatives and friends. Their sixty years of wedded life have been spent in the home at Millark, built by them when they were married, and their anniversary was celebrated there last Sunday from 1 until 4 o’clock p.m. The wedding ceremony was performed again about three o’clock, by Rev. Linvengood of the Fulton U.B. church, in the presence of 125 friends and relatives, among them being Mrs. Johnson’s sister, Mrs. Mary Nisey, of Tiosa; John Sowers, of Macy and Levi Horton of Wagoner’s Station, who witnessed the first ceremony. They received flowers and a number of gifts. These estimable people are in fairly good health and Mrs. Johnson expressed her desire to a representative of the Republican that they might have a “belling” and a drum corps be present. They are the parents of three children: Harry E. Johnson, of Peru; Mrs. Clay Sheets of Rochester and Mrs. John Conrad, of Millark, who lives close to them; also thirteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. – Peru Republican, Jan. 14, 1927. |

Death was due to paralysis and followed an illness of twenty weeks. The aged man had suffered three strokes of paralysis during the five months period of his sickness. Mr. Johnson was born in Miami county, Ohio, on September 17, 1844, and came to this county in a wagon from his birthplace with his parents, Samuel and Mahalia Ann JOHNSON. They settled on a farm near Millark. Mr. Johnson at the outbreak of the Civil War, enlisted in a company which was recruited in Fulton county. This was Company K. of the 46th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Adam NYE, who died on December 20, was a member of the company. The deceased saw service at the battles of Lookout Mountain, Chickamauga and marched with Sherman to the sea. He received his discharge in Louisville, Ky., in 1865. For many years Mr. Johnson was a member of the McClung Post of the G.A.R. of this city. Following the war, Mr. Johnson returned to this county where he followed the occupation of farming for the remainder of his life. On January 6, 1867, he was married to Miss Almeda ZARTMAN in a ceremony which was performed in the Zartman Church near Macy. Mrs. Johnson preceded her husband in death. Survivors are three children, Mrs. Clay SHEETS of this city, Mrs. John CONRAD and Harry JOHNSON, both of near Mt. Zion, fifteen grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. The funeral services will be held at 1:30 o’clock Sunday afternoon from the Christian Church at Macy with the Rev. Ernest LAUGHLIN, pastor of the church in charge. Burial will be made in the cemetery at Mt. Zion.14 |
